To say FMJ has more or less penetration than a hollow point is an over simplification. Like anything self defense related, the situation dictates the response. Knowing your gear is critical, how it will behave is your responsibility. Armed self defense is a thinking mans game, to think it any less and not apply thought to your every action could be folly.

That being said, I do carry hollow points in my defensive weapon(s). But to tell a person they are wrong for using ball ammo is very likely invalid. They hopefully have their reasoning and are most likely prepared to defend that choice, should the need arise.
No matter what ammo or calibre you carry,if there is a self defense shooting, there are going to be more than enough Monday morning quaterbacks to analize the shoot and suggest something else. Make no mistake about it ,the quaterbacks will be defense lawyers for the person shot, and there are no correct answers. BTW ,with that in mind I have been known to carry Sig V Crown or Speer .

It's honestly your choice what you should carry, but it's just something to think about. A box of good defensive hollow points is only like $25.

Currently I use sig v-crown 147 grain. Thinking of switching to HST. Whats best for both a 3.5" and 4.5" barrel length guns (both 9mm)? Or am I fine with just using HST 124 grain for both?
Check the link to lucky gunner that I posted. They have tested tons of defensive ammo.

But it depends. I know people that carry critical defense in the summer and critical duty in the winter.

I second the HST. They are just the stellar performer out there. if you think you're going to shoot through a door and you definitely know what's on the other side you can throw a gold Dot in every other round. A lot of Texas Highway Patrol and PD will do that . A bonded bullet will always hold up through glass sheet rock etc. better. But if you feel that will never happen the HST is a stellar performer. I would still have no problem shooting through a door with it. Also if you have a 3 inch gun, your choice has really narrowed down. A lot of these manufacturers don't get the bullet up to the velocity out of 3 inch barrels . However HST 124 in all grains +p are not outclassed every manufacturer. Winchester Ranger T's close behind . There's a very good YouTube video series I believe it's called (Ammo Quest shooting the bull), he does 9 mm ammo test to exact FBI specifications. All major ammo is shot out of a 3 inch Sigg. Also he uses true FBI ballistic gelatin, not the spin off. Also at the same ambient temperature that FBI uses

Way back when I used to carry Winchester Silvertip 115-gr JHP specifically because they penetrated the least of conventional JHP's....still have a box around somewhere. These days 124-gr XTP.

Same here. Since I don't have the time or resources to do my own ballistic tests, I rely on the short-barrel tests that ShootingTheBull410 does on YouTube. There are slight differences between standard pressure and +P, but not enough for him to overwhelmingly recommend +P. Heavier bullets seem to do better in short barrels, so I use the 147gr HST in my Shield (3.1") and 124gr in my 4" and longer barrels.

EDC / CC / HD - 147gr F.HST or SIG V-Crown
4th Reich police state genocide now w/ more dead babies across the street - 127gr Win. T / SXT +P+

Target should stay on targets.

True story, names changed -
Guy gets home, hears truck broken in to, shoots and hits perp and points a gun at him while on cell phone calling 9/11, reports need for ambulance (so sweet of him)

LEO Terry: "Why didn't you kill him, John?!?!?! I know what this looks like, and I believe you, the homeowner, that you were defending your vehicle he was breaking in to...

John: Terry, we're friends... you see the broken window on the truck...

Terry: "Listen John, my friend... we've got a lot of paperwork to do now, and the lawyers are coming for your *** [because he's alive and can hire them]."

LEO escorts John to his cruiser and puts gun in evidence bag and asks John to turn around put his hands on the patrol car.

"Next time, you shoot to kill, because the guy you shot and held at gunpoint [hostage charge] in that ambulance has a different story."

*cuffs John for overnight stay*

Anything by a reputable producer is going to be good. I like Federal HST best, but I will use Speer Gold Dot, Hornady Critical Duty/Defender, Winchester SXT, all in the standard pressure 124 area grain. The Hornady Critical Duty is a 135 flex lock designed for barrier penetration while the Defender is a 115 grain designed mainly for a defensive role. I think the HST has the best and most consistent expansion and penetration, which is one reason it is the number one selling bullet on the market for 9mm, .40 and .45ACP. It really is a fantastic design. Honorable mention is the old Federal Hydra-shok...old HST design, but still very effective bullet for defense.
