P290RS: 124gr HST or 135gr Critical Duty?

This is a discussion on P290RS: 124gr HST or 135gr Critical Duty? within the Ammo and Reloading forums, part of the Gun Forum category; Out of the P290RS's 2.9" bbl, which load would you choose and why? Thx... Tomac...

Exactly. But only after proper break in and at least 200 rounds of your carry ammo thru it.

Use whatever runs through your gun reliably.
I did a "test" with different types and brands for accuracy, reliability, and feel.

Rather than relying on reading or recommendations, I determined what was best for my gun, and by extension, mine and my family's lives.

The Critical Defense and PDX-1 were as accurate, but the Barnes TAC-XPD had the softest recoil and muzzle flip, and least muzzle flash.

I would highly suggest you run a few different types for yourself.

HST is far superior. If it feeds well go wit it. Expansion just doesn't hold up on the Critical Defense or Critical Duty.

How is expansion and penetration for the 124gr HST out of a 3" bbl? I haven't been able to locate any gel tests.

What he said (GBIA), I personally use 147 grain HST in my P290RS, Hornady just didn't expand the way I was hoping. The little red ball seemed to act as a plug on the Hornady and they never expanded well AT ALL. I shot 124 HST, 147HST, Hornady(I believe135grain), Speer Gold Dot, Winchester Black Talons, and Remington Golden Saber and had best expansion with the HST in both grains, Black Talons and Golden Sabers came in 2nd, followed by Gold Dot and Hornady in last place. But like people said, practice with your carry ammo and make sure it functions correctly.

Correction: Gold dot was much, much better than Hornady. I worded it poorly. The Gold Dot was just barely behind the Golden Saber and the Black Talon. The Hornady wasn't even close.

I tested these myself through 2 layers of denim and water jugs and they expanded beautifully. I shot numerous of each of the bullets listed in my previous comment and all of the HST expanded perfectly. Most of the others performed about 80% perfect and 20% poorly. The Hornady was about 50-50.
