This evening I had the opportunity to do a bit of expansion testing with my fresh box of Federal Tactical HST 9mm 147 grain ammunition. Nothing fancy, just a few jugs of water lined up. Shot it from maybe 7 yards and sprayed a bunch of water everywhere. Recovered the bullet and this is what I found:

Weighed 146 grains, 99.3% weight retention. Width of the expanded 147gr 9mm round... 0.655".

Five, from what I hear it usually gets the job done up to a .40 cal round no problem. Lots of fun.

Water tests are awesome if you want to see full expansion, if you want to see realistic expansion use clay

Nice test though

And if you REALLY want to know what they will do use ballistic gel.

I've been reading a lot of Massad Ayoob lately, his take is that for the most part any of the commercially available SD loads are more than adequate. Now his recommendations from real world leo involved shootings are Speer Gold Dot, Federal HST and Winchester SXT.

I am curious if you tried this test with .45 ACP HSTs? Impressive looking in a 9mm. I am trying to figure out what self defense ammo to use for my new .45 caliber P220. I thought I might try Hornady .45 XTP - $20 for 20 at Cabela's this past weekend. It was cheaper than the Hornady Critical Defense .45. I bought a couple of boxes of the XTP rounds but have not shot any yet at the range.

Thanks!

Dave

360Glitch, were those HST's the standard load or the +p ? By the way your "lead flower" sure is purdy!

That’s what Great Expansion is supposed to look like, awesome pictures Cory. My 147gr Black Talons look very similar.

VERY COOL! They remind me of the politically incorrect "Black Talon" bullets from the 90's...
