BEST of...9MM??? (range and HD ammo)

Mahalo for all the positive vibes fellow forum members. If any of you have recommendations for a new Sig owner (P229 9MM) please fire away. Things that I have concerns about or just curious of are: (of course, all of your opinions are welcome...I know there are a lot of choices)

Best 9MM ammo for range and why. (under $0.30)
Best cleaning supplies and why. (hardware, and lube/grease, Money not issue here)
Best Home Defense Ammo and why. (Money not issue)
Best websites OR Best LGS on Oahu for ammo. to purchase ammo (based on inventory, customer service, cost)

Thank you for your input.

Welcome!

1. Range Ammo: Blazer aluminum case 115-gr. Why? $10/box and it shoots damn straight.
2. Cleaning Supplies: Buy a basic Hoppe's 9 handgun cleaning kit. You need a brush, rod, and jag end for running patches. Basic powder solvent will suffice for now, as will the Hoppe's oil that comes with it. Find lots of Q-Tips for hard to reach places, some pipe cleaners, and old toothbrushes. Upgrade on occasion to: Bronze-phosphor cleaning brush, copper and powder solvents from decent manufacturers (shooter's choice), Mobil 1 full synthetic motor oil for anything that rotates on a pin, and any kind of decent grease for everything that slides. Decent greases? Mobil 1, Tetra, TW-25B, Militec, etc., etc.
3. HD/SD AMMO Including, but not limited to:
50 rd box - 9mm Speer Gold Dot 124 +P LE Hollow Point 53617 | SGAmmo.com

50 rd box - 9mm Hornady Critical Duty LE 135 grain +P 90225 | SGAmmo.com

50 rd box - 9mm Winchester Ranger 127gr +P+ T-Series Ammo RA9TA | SGAmmo.com

Just an FYI: try to stay away from 147-grain HP loads. Massad Ayoob did a lot of testing, and in the real world, sometimes they work sometimes they don't. The 115s and 124s are impressive in real world shootings.

4. I live in Idaho. Can't help you much there, but if SGAmmo ships to HI, you're set.

Good Luck!

Regards,

Rob

Hi 808SIG

I use Sellier & Belloit round nose 9mm on sale ~$11/50 rds for range ammo. Clean, consistent, has worked great in my SP2022 and Taurus 709 Slim.

For self defense ammo, I think Federal HST 147 gr is really good based on tests I did. But check out the recommendations in this link - very good info:

Best Choices for Self Defense Ammo

I also like the Fiocchi 92 gr EMB based on personal tests and some online tests I've seen.

Thank you SnakeShooter

Aloha SnakeShooter,

Mahalo for your indepth reply. I will defn check out your suggs. If you're ever down in the Aloha State, please PM me.

I'll keep you updated on what I shoot and the results. Right now, I have to get zeroed in on the range and then make wiser choices as to ammo. But I will shoot the Blazer 115 for sure.

Thank you,

808SIG

Tul-ammo! Dirty steel cased Russian load. Runs you about 9.97 a box, at least here in VA. I use it all day long in all of my handguns. I use Hornady Critical Defense as my carry ammo.

Aloha Geobob!

Mahalo for your input as well Geobob,

I was actually thinking about the Sellier and Belloit cartridges, but chose to purchase Fiocchi 124grain. (Prior to reading your post) But I will defn do my own research on the S&B cartridges.

Thanks for the link. I checked it out and...WHOA, it fried my feeble brain. I'm like a kid learning his ABCs.

I'll keep you posted sir.

Sincerely,

808SIG

What did the bullet impact that it failed to expand?

I've generally had good luck with Speer, Federal and Winchester in their better configurations...many of the other brands for practice have worked as well...I don't have a lot of experience with Remington but that's just the way the ball bounced...I have no problem with any of the premium makes and their premium lines...it's only your life...

I use federal hst 147gr +p for defense, hasn't failed me yet, but I'm typing this on my phone as I get ready to mop up the oatmeal my 3 year old puked on the floor so there is a chance I've died and gone to hell lol :-)

Saw a 9mm Hornady Critical Defense extracted from a coyote a guy I know popped on his own land. It opened well.
Coyote was brazen. From what I hear, he stood there at about 20 yards and watched the guys car roll to stop, the guy get out, unholster, etc. ... and not-so-Wiley Coyote didn't move.
Ended up DRT ... dead right there.

Experience of the Illinois State Police, one of the first agencies to carry the 9 (they've since gone to 40, I believe) was drive the 115 gr. HP very fast and it worked fine. Or so I'm told; it's possible I'm FoS.

Yep. I prefer the Federal by a touch, but both are fine for practice. I've had a few failure to fires with the WWB, but at the price when you can find the 100 round packages, who cares?

Thread is relevant to my interests.

I have a hard time finding good loads at just about any store around my area. Almost all have the crap that is great for range, but not HD.

Any suggestions on the best sites to pick up 9MM rounds? I'm leaning towards the Speers and do you know if they sell in high volumes as well?
