I am about to begin doing my own reloading and I have a friend who owns Tennessee Valley Bullets. He manufactures and sells cast bullets that are usually about 35% cheaper than FMJ's that I'm seeing on sites like Grafs and Midway. I was looking at the Sig site to see if they had anything on using cast bullets and came across this in the FAQ section.

Can I use reloaded or hand-loaded ammo?

No. The use of any ammunition that is not an American factory loaded, SAAMI approved round could be dangerous and will void your warranty.

I'm guessing that you guys that do reload just ignore this and Sig has this just to keep from having to replace parts or guns due to user error.

What about using cast bullets? TVB has a great reputation for manufacturing quality bullets and I've seen a good number of posts from people who have used them. Do you think that they are safe to use in my SP2022?

In case you are interested in his site the web address is http://www.tennessee....com/index.html

Most manufacturers will say 'No' because of liability issues especially outside of regulated control. I reload and I assume the responsibility for my reloads. I don't use other individuals reloads. I have, however, used factory reloads and these would be considered 'regulated' to SAAMI specs if regulated is even the proper term.

Lead bullets can be used but I use jacketed bullets of various designs and, at a minimum, plated bullets. I personally will pay the extra associated with jacketed bullets for ease of cleaning. I find the exposed lead and bullet lubes make for more cleaning

Hey Volz, I agree completely with Reliable. A cast bullet, provided it is made well, will be fine through the SIG from a safety and wear standpoint, but it will mean a lot more cleaning and a voided warranty. Good luck with reloading! I myself have purchased two reloading manuals and have begun researching what equipment to buy and all that jazz. Keep us posted on your reloading experiences, if you so please. I'd be interested in hearing about it.

I reloaded for years, and the savings was just a part of it. I enjoyed the whole experience.

Re: Lead fouling, I always ran a couple Mags / Cylinders full of FMJ through at the end of

a shooting session to help scrub the bore of most of the lead and then used a " Lewis Lead

Remover " to make quick work of the remainder. Brownells Be Safe, JB

Main issue is that you have to get the barrel really clean when switching between cast & jacketed or vise versa. For simplicity, I just have a spare barrel I use for shooting cast. It only takes a few seconds to switch out the barrel in my P229 or P220, and lets me shoot either or both in the same range session, and then take my time cleaning the cast barrel. (Yes, cast does require more cleaning, mostly of the barrel) It's one of the benefits of shooting a Sig, which is SO easy to field strip..... Also a Lewis Lead Remover kit is great, but I'm cheap, and use bronze wool wrapped around an old bore brush. Shooting cast is a LOT cheaper. Of course, as is true of reloading in general, you don't end up saving money, you just end up shooting a lot more for the same money. (This detail is not to be shared with your wife) For me, that same dollar outlay not only gives me more shooting time, but I enjoy the reloading of as well. I end up getting a lot of hobby time for the buck!
