After lots of research and some testing of my own I carry Federal HST jacketed hollowpoints. What do you carry?

I use Federal HST jacked hollow point as well, by solely by the recommendation of a friend whom is in private security. Out of curiosity, what kinda of testing did you do? I've been trying to find a defensive round that will get the job done, but since I live in an apartment, I'm concerned about wall penetration. I don't have a ton of money to throw around so I really can't afford to do any testing on my own. I was thinking of getting some 135 grain Federal HST JHP for my .40 and leave it at that, until I can do testing on a few brands.

Hey Jeff, I've heard a buit about the win. black talon rounds. I was told they stopped producing them, so only people that stocked up have them. Is this your experience? Also, how do you like them as a defense round?

I can confirm that they have stopped producing them long ago, however there latest and greatest round is the "Ranger T" series. You guessed it, T stands for Talon. Some argue the newer technology used in them makes them superior to Black Talons, however I do not think and bullet will overshadow the Black Talon's infamous "history".

The history and notorious name is what gets all the attention. As a carry round I love it. I am in love with the Talon for one reason, it does more damage on initial entry than versus having to travel and open up, because of the design of the talon it does most of its effects right away vs. standard hollow points that have to open up first. The "sharp" edges of the talon once open are what can cause immense additional damage. But the bullet can't make up for aim or the shooter

That's what I discovered on wikipedia, but I never trust what I read on there. I'll stick with Federal HST for now, but I've always wanted to run a black talon through my 30-06 and see what kind of damage it would do to a stack of phonebooks.

I can tell you the amount of damage I have done to blocks of clay with a talon vs. HST or ball or Sabers is insanely more damage. I will have to run Ranger "T" vs. a Talon at some point to see what happens.

When I did my HST testing I shot a round of Ranger T as well. Did not look as pretty but certainly still opened up with it's sharp "talons" ready to do what needs to be done. Slim, my dad has some 30-06 Black Talons, I might have to see if I can snag one from him and see what I can do with it. |

Originally I used the Winchester 147gr "Black Talon" in 9mm. As the previous posters stated, production of that round was stopped. I now use the closest replacement to that round, Winchester Ranger SXT 147gr. in my 226 and never had any problems.
