I haven't read any tests on this round but here are the specs.

Liberty Ammunition’s USM4 UltraDefense

Liberty USM4 Ultra Defense CD950 9MM+P, Hollow Point

Liberty Ammunition’s USM4 UltraDefense handgun projectile is a monolithic, hollow- point, lead-free handgun projectile that significantly outperforms traditional lead-based handgun ammunition across every metric. Liberty Ammunition’s handgun rounds have historically only been available to the Military because of their lethality, and have up until recently have been guarded by the Department of Defense under a Level III secret review. Now, after customization specifically for US Law Enforcement and Civilian Handgun Markets, the breakthrough performance projectiles are for the first time being made available to a broader target audience.

SPECIFICATIONS:

Caliber :9mm
Bullet Type :Hollow Point
Bullet Weight :50 GR

I saw these rounds in .45 at my LGS the other day. There is a thin jacket outside and the rest is entirely hollow. I do not remember the grains of the .45 but it was less than half of the typical 230-180 range. The thing that blew my mind about them are the velocity readings (or claims at least) right on the box they are saying this .45 round will approach 2000fps!??
The rounds are frangibles I believe so I was tempted to try some out for my apartment situation, but it's a one box limit at my LGS and I needed some range rounds. I will definitely check them out eventually though.

Thanks.

Honestly I was mainly wondering how much of a weight difference there would be when carrying something this light. But if no one is carrying it I may have to pick up a box and check it out.

Here's one of several tests on YouTube of the 9 mm ammunition:

I bought some for my P220 from Midway for just that reason. I think they give the velocity for the 45acp at 1900 fps. I haven't had a chance to shoot it as of yet.

I went ahead and ordered some from Midway a few days ago and they arrived today. I threw some on the scale and as far as weight they will save me a couple of ounces depending on what I'm carrying. The Hornady Tap CQ 124gr I have weighed right at 7oz for 16 rounds. The USM4 weighs in at 4.3. Now I just have to shoot enough to be comfortable enough to carry it!

Fired a few boxes today at the range. It went bang every time. I liked the feel of it and it will save me a few ounces when carrying. It was definitely louder than the 115gr WWB and the 124 Tap CQ but didn't feel any "snappier".

Not even 10" of penetration on bare gel... I'll pass.

Yeah, I gave up on using it shortly after trying it out. Started carrying Federal HST's instead.

The age old question. Would you rather be hit by a 150 pound guy running at 18 mph or a 300 pound guy running at 9 mph. Ballistics 101.

Shoot the round you can fire most accurately.

I've not shot the 9mm but have run the 60gr .40 S&W to see how it shoots. Here's a test of the .40 S&W from Liberty.

I've tried the Buffalo Barnes 125gr Tac XP in .40 and is 1 of the 3 rounds I carry. Check this demo of the 125gr Tac XP. I'll definitely keep these in the mag!

Wow, a Level III secret review.

That sound you hear is my bullshit alarm going off.

Pre-fragmentation ammo

I carry the liberty ammo in the 9mm in my sig sp2022. There are a lot of mixed reviews out there and i will agree that carrying JHP is tried and true, but over penetration is a huge concern for me. I pray i never have to fire it like everyone else with a ccl, but if i do I sure as hell don't want to hit someone else and kill them. Case in point....a few years ago a guy down in Miami was in a mall parking lot and was attacked by a guy....he pulled his weapon and fired 3 JHP's into the guy. All 3 hit and 2 of the 3 exited the bad guy hitting a mom and her little girl.....the girl died. I believe the shooter is still in prison for killing someone other than the intended target. I'm not an everyday carry person, but when I do i'm smart enough to know that in the heat of the moment im not going to know or think to know if someone is in the background of the person about to get shot and I doubt they will allow me to ask them to move over so i can see before i shoot them either lol. I do also carry on occasion with speer gold dot 124gr JHP, but when I do they are in less crowded areas. Home, malls, grocery stores, etc with high traffic i only carry the liberty 50gr. The round is made to break through bone but frag on impact with soft tissue. It doesn't penetrate as far, but the frag bits spread out more than a JHP and unless the target is a fat a$$ it would still hit vital organs without the over penetration. I've had a couple guys tell me that wouldn't enter someone and just give them skin irritation....i laugh and say ok let me shoot you with one.....uhhhhh what uhhhhh no. Then i say, "thank you for proving my point." I "may" have to fire an extra round or two to put someone down, but im down with that possible trade-off of knowing i won't kill or maime an innocent. Just my 2 cents.

one more thing

My advanced pistol instructor actaully turned me on to pre-frag rounds. He used to work at Sig Sauer and he only used the HALO/pre-frag rounds in his sigs for carry. He says he had to shoot someone once who broke into his house in FL here....2 rounds to the chest with the .40 60gr round and the guy died. Instructor said he was told that the frag bits riddled his heart with holes and wasn't able to recover in surgery. Not sure of the penetration difference between a 50gr 9 and a 60 grain .40 but can't be much
