Ok so I am sure most of you dont have to worry about this but here in AZ where it is hot as hell (Literally) It is hard to want to ware anything but flip flops. As an instructor I feel this is a big no no most of the time (excluding going to the pool etc...). SO what do you guys think flip flops a no go?

I personally don't conceal carry because I don't have a CCL, but I would never want to rely on flip flops in a defensive situation. They usually have little or no traction, and if they stick to the ground, the often don't stick well to your feet. Since they don't hold snug to feet either, I think that poses a tripping hazard. I also can't run fast in flip flops without them falling off, so if you gotta dive for a gun 20 feet away, flip flops might make the difference between winning and losing that fight... and in AZ where it's so hot, it's not like you can just toss the flip flops and go barefoot either. That's just my opinion, certainly could be wrong in light of never carrying or being in that situation. They way I see it, police and military wear boots for a reason.

Slippers...as we call them in Hawaii

Just want to chime in here. Tomatoe-tomato...all the same. Slippers, as we call the flip-flops here, are a way of life. From the tactical perspective, slippers are hardly the way to go.

BUT from years of wearing them I can run fast; probably sub 5 seconds in the 40 yard dash. (& I am overweight. 6'0" 235 pounds) LOL I should take a video of it and post.

Growing up with them on, or even barefoot is how most of the kids go to school. I work in a retail store, so a lot of the times I wear slippers.

In any case, if I were to get into a self defense situation, I'd want to be wearing shoes.

Possible video to come....:D

First of all, my philosophy is that you cannot be happy unless your feet are happy. However, you will rarely find me wearing anything but boots or shoes. My footwear is worn to protect my feet as well as keep me comfy. You will never catch me barefoot. I have, damn near, an actual phobia of being barefoot. I have stepped on bees, glass, hot coals, nails, etc, more times than I can count, so my solution is to keep my tootsies protected. I do have a pair of sandals with toes and heels, kinda a hybrid between sneeks and sandals. They're decent in hot weather, but more importantly, my toes are safe. Another of my most important philosophies is function before fashion. So, AZ, all that said... you wear whatever you want on your feet wherever and whenever you want, as long as you're happy.

I found these a couple years back, it took about 10 minutes to get used to the toe thing, but if lived out in Az, I'd be wearing them a lot. I just plain love them for hiking, climbing, water sports or whatever. Vibram's Five Finger shoes...

I've seen these a few times and think they look pretty interesting. I like the idea of having the extra dexterity with my feet. I might have to get some in the future.

Glad you mentioned Hawaii, 808SIG, because I was going to mention that as well. When I was in the military I was stationed in Hawaii. In the Marine Corps, wearing flip-flops, or whatever you want to call them, in civilian attire is usually not authorized. However, some of the few Marines authorized to wear them are Marines stationed in Hawaii. Military personnel, particularly Marines, often have problems with a very very small minority of the local population in Hawaii, so the wear of flip-flops is authorized so Marines can blend in with the local populace a little better. That may seem like a minor thing, but as 808SIG says, EVERYONE in Hawaii wears flip-flops, so someone who's not wearing them automatically sticks out like a sore thumb.

The point is, while flip-flops may not be the most battle-appropriate footware in most tactical situations, blending in with everyone around you has a tactical value of its own that may be more valuable than wearing more "tactical" footware.
