New pistol owner here who is waiting for his ccw to arrive. Came across a situation yesterday that is something I had never considered until I contemplated ccw.

On our way back from the Outer Banks traveling west on US 40 the speed limit just increased to 70 MPH. I was in the left lane and just passed one car. I was approaching a second car in the right lane when a small heard of deer start bolting across the road from left to right.

We all slam on the brakes but one deer goes in front of me and literally runs into the car to my right. The deer flys off the roadway to the shoulder and is clearly critically injured but still flailing around. The driver of the car that was hit pulls off but the rest of us continue on.

I am wondering if I had my ccw would it have been appropriate to stop and put the deer down? That was my first thought but...

Comments please.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Humane yes, but also unlawful discharge of a firearm. Have you got your deer tag with you, is it the right cal. for hunting deer in you state. If another motorist sees you pull a CCW is that a justified purpose according to your state?? I don't disagree with your premise and common sense would dictate your act of kindness and I applaud you for such consideration. However, the state might very much look at you as just a common criminal though. Once you're a felon no CCL and no GUN either.

Best to contact law enforcement/animal control to deal with it.

What everyone said. IMO, Nobody EVER needs to know you're carrying or your CCW status unless it's a personal defensive situation.

That's a tough call, and a situation like that would really freak me out emotionally. Unfortunately, I think the members advising caution are correct. You really don't know how law enforcement is going to react when they arrive, so its just not worth it. Leave, don't look back, and have a Jack Daniels when you get home.

Let law enforcement deal with it after you've contacted them. Some of the guys out there in the past would carry a smaller pistol for these reasons. The really green guys in the past have tried rocks or slitting the deer's throat, yeah, that never ends well.

Again, if you would have shot the deer, you'd be in violation of the law. However, after the LEO takes care of it, in most cases, you can get a claim tag to take the deer home in many areas.

Your CC weapon is intended for one purpose only, and killing wounded deer isn't it. That thing stays in its holster unless you need to defend human life.

Thanks everyone.
The consensus was my second thought as well.
Although the incident happened in NC the law in VA where I live requires the driver to contact law enforcement or the fish & game.

This same incident happened in the county I live in a few years ago to a friend. After talking with fish & game they told the guy (who had a rifle) to shoot the deer and take it home but I realize that is just in my neck of the woods.
