| Small gun safes.
I am looking for a small gun safe that I can keep in the night stand. I am looking for quick entry and good quality. I am not opposed to biometrics but has any one had any trouble with them? Thanks in advance Trey |

I have a biometric pad on my laptop that is in no way a quick and easy access to my computer. I'm not sure if the biometric device is the same as on laptop computers or not, but if it is, I would not get one. My small safe has a 10 digit touchpad to enter a code. It has never been a problem. Battery operated with a key back up. Mine is a 'SportLock' safe.

That's a nice one, but you can get them cheaper, and fire resistant, too. I have an electronic combo lock safe for less than $50 and it's good for 30 mins in a house fire.

Mine is a Stack-On PDS-500. It was a gift - so it's not my most optimal choice - but it retails right at or under $50. Actually, looking at it now - it's not fire resistant like my documents safe is (boo!). But the point is: you can find cheaper options, and more befitting to your situation, if that's your prerogative. For me, personally, it's more about security than the quickest access. Yes, I want to have access as fast as possible, but I also don't want one of my children (or an intruder) to be able to walk off with the whole safe, either. So for me, the option to bolt down or cable-lock it to furniture is more important than being able to unlock it in two seconds or less. I'm not saying that GunVault is a bad choice, I just suggest doing some more keyword searches on Google Shopping before putting down $150. |

I have had a Gunvault for years, no complaints, but it is not biometric. David Sherman |

I have a Barska biometric safe Standard Biometric Keypad Safe By Barska - Biometric Safe by Barska I was looking for a particular size and this fit the bill. It allows you to store a bunch of fingerprints from different angles, but I was lazy and only did one to start, but have had no problems with even just the one. It won't prevent a determined thief, but fits into a small space, stores a few handguns ad some ammo, and I didn't have to bring it in on a forklift. |

I purchased a GunVault "Speed Vault Biometric 500" when I purchased my first hand gun in January. Got grandkids that spend time at the house so security is paramount. But also wanted quick access even in the dark; safe & deployable was my objective. Have it mounted to the wall (bolted to the wall stud) between the bed and nightstand. Nice thing about the Speed Vault is that when you release the lock, the "drawer" rotates outward (away from the wall) under its own weight presenting the pistol grip for a quick sure pull. The unit comes with a mounting plate which the vault attaches to via two slotted tabs and three 1/8" thumb screws. The thumb screws were insufficient in my opinion for preventing someone from ripping the vault from the mounting plate and making of with the vault with my SIG inside. I dumped the mounting plate, drilled two 3/8" holes in the back of the vault and ran bolts through into the wall stud. Probably voided the warranty but it's secure. The vault has an LED light in it that comes on when it's open. I like to have the drawer open at night so I taped the proximity switch closed. It also emits a loud "beep" when the drawer opens each time. Don't like the idea of alerting a perp to my activities in the event of a break in. Can't neutralize that without going into the electronics which is another reason for leaving it open at night. The biometric lock works very reliably. At first we had a few instances where it took several finger passes to get the lock to release. It's sensitive to the angle of your finger passing over the sensor. We just programmed our finger several times with different angles and the problem went away. Takes about two seconds to open. All in all, not cheep ($300) but very effective. |
