Red dot scope or Hologram type

Just bought a Sig 522 and want to enhance the sights, going with a Sightmark mfg model just unsure of the big or little advantages of one over the other.

The main function (for me personally) in having the red dot is quicker target acquisition for range shooting at 25 yards or so and in. I also think that later on I will get a magnified scope and a bipod and work on expanding my range out to 100-150yds, just for fun. Note: there seems to be an unending number of scopes out there, the seller of the gun recommends the Sightmark as it is not as high of a quality as an Aimpoint, but a clone at a reasonable price that performs well for a plinker (me).

Looked further at Sightmark and see they have the red dot and the hologram type of sights, why do you guys like one over the other. Going to go view some Youtube reviews of both and expand my knowledge.

Some of my own answers

doing a little research today, it seems that the hologram style look/work great inside the store, get them out in brighter sunlight and the dot disappears, unless you are buying one of the much more pricier models from a different mfger like Aimpoint. Not so sure with the red dot scope type.

I ordered a Sightmark red dot scope today thru Amazon after looking at both versions, hologram and scope type. $68. Prices were all over the map for the same scope. For a regular scope I might exceed $150, that will depend on features and quality.

Primary Arms is a respected, low-price option for both red dots and scopes.

Vortex Strikefire is a little more expensive, yet affordable red dot @ $150. I wouldn't necessarily trust Primary Arms, or anything less, for serious use. However, I would trust a Strikefire.

For your purposes, I like the red dot scopes. I have a Barska Air Gun Scope for my 522.

Now what would you do?

So the Sightmark arrived, I open the box and take it out and start to look it over to make sure everything works and I see that the red dot has a 5 MOA, meaning 5 levels of brightness. Yesterday was the brightest sunniest day of the year I think so setting it on 5 overcame the brightness, nice. Moved back into the shade to get a feel for what I will most likely be shooting in, 1-2 or 3. Turn from 1 to 2 and the light goes out when it gets to #2 turn it back out of it's click stop for 2 and the light is back on, back to the click stop, light out So i fiddled with the switch a little further, checked the batteries, tried to see if the switch was even accessable from the battery compartment and no it did not appear as though it was. I got a dud.

So I contacted Sightmark this morning, explained the problem, they confirmed it is not working properly, I can send it to them for repair or replacement(they decide) or just return to Amazon and keep shopping. I suspect what I was shipped was a used scope(could see gun oil on the area where it mounts), the problem popped up with the previous user and rather than repair, they just sent it back to Amazon where it went back into inventory as a good scope and then re shipped the problem to me. I can understand how this happens, it got returned to joe/jill Amazon, shipping/receiving clerk, who does not know how to check these things out or cares for that matter, saw all the parts were present, no damage that they could see and recycled it.

I have a few days to mull this over, right now I'm leaning towards returning to Amazon and keep shopping, got a great price on the scope but it is partially broken and will completely fail at the switch at some point in the near future.

I'm lovin' the 522

runs like a sewing machine went thru 500 rounds of Winchester M22 very reliable, only one FTF, replayed it and it fired.

Went with a Bushnell Trophy 1X28 red/green 4 reticle scope for $85 Amazon. Spent a good bit of time getting it sited in, probably not at the final setting yet and probably never will It seems that when you change reticle settings, the scope must be reset/zeroed, it changes things a bit inside. Going to get a bipod for zeroing at 50 yards, was using a tall table and range bag as a rest for getting to where it is currently set, need to get it just a little more stable to be as close to perfect as possible, i'm a click or two away.
