Holster comments - Alien Gear Cloak Tuck 3.0

**6/20 UPDATE**

I contacted AG Customer Support and spoke to a very nice gentleman who instructed me to wash the neoprene in hot soapy water, and if the odor persisted I could return it for a refund...or I could simply send it back now. Since I'm going to eat the shipping cost (both ways) I decided to try washing the holster. After drying, the odor has subsided significantly...and I have a new appreciation for the synthetic material (versus leather) because its completely washable, which means I will easily be able to wash the neoprene when it gets stinky from sweat.

So I'm gonna give this holster a try after all.

.................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .............................

Wasn't sure where to put this thread, didn't see a section for accessories. So, since I purchased this holster for my 938, this was where I chose to post.

Just received my AG Cloak Tuck 3.0 holster in the mail (purchased sight-unseen) and I must say I'm EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED with what I received. The first thing I noticed upon removing it from the package was a God-awful smell...chemical-like, radiating from the side with the neoprene lining. If I had to try and describe the odor, I would say...if a bowling ball had an **** I imagine it would smell exactly like this holster.

I left it out of the bag, exposed to air for two days, hoping the smell would subside, but to no avail. Although not quite as pungent as it was, it still stinks...and I have NO plans to put this thing next to my skin. I can only imagine how Texas summer sweat will exacerbate the already heinous smell of this thing.

Next, I noticed how cheap the overall "feel" of the holster. I mistakenly assumed that they used leather because the photos looked much like my last holster (Crossbreed Super Tuck) but this is a synthetic material...rubber, maybe?

Granted, this holster was HALF the price of some of the other holsters I use (Garrett, Kelly, Crossbreed, etc)...and it looks it. In fact, in my humble opinion, it SCREAMS "cheap". I should have known the old adage is always true..."You get what you pay for".

If this thing didn't literally stink so bad, I would give it a try to see if it would serve the purpose. However, I don't want that smell transferring to my clothing/skin.

This will be returned to AlienGear, and my search continues for an IWB for my P938.

some neoprene will smell awful depending on the company they sourced it from. ( i work with neoprene insulation a lot)

also im pretty sure AG uses some type of cheap plastic instead of actual kydex for their holsters. no thanks.

Check out greenforce tactical for a really awesome IWB.

Tuckable IWB Holster - Green Force Tactical, LLC

or stealthgear holsters are also really awesome if you want a hybrid type.

The original AG Cloak Tuck holster has a leather backing.

I have the 2.0 version and can't recall and unusual strong odor when I got mine.

IMO the AG holster are a pretty decent hybrid holster and a good value. A lot seem to like them. I have gotten away from such hybrids because I don't like holster that large and because hybrids generally have so so holstering ability and are a pain to get onto my gun belt. I find all kydex holster (Garrett, Ozark, JM Custom Kydex) suit my needs much better for most my pistols though I really like my Garrett Silent Thunder Fusion because it is a minimalist hybrid design that does not have any backing get in the way of gripping my pistol and works well for comfort/concealment my HK P30L other than the so so holstering ability though it is easy enough to put it on my belt with the pistol in the holster.

N82 Tactical makes a nice tuckable and doesn't stink. Fits either 238 or 938

My Alien Gear 3.0 had no odor at all. It is my everyday carry for the P320. I use a N82 for the 938 since it is a smaller gun. I really like the Alien Gear because it does spread the weight for a larger gun.

That was easily one of the most comfortable holsters I've ever tried. Unfortunately when I practiced drawing the firearm I couldn't get it out about 20% of the time.

I called them and asked if they would make one without the inward twist to draw and they said not at this time.

My guess is that under duress that might go up. I let it go. I'm a big fan of Remora holsters and also for cooler temperatures I use an Stealthgear Onyx. Excellent construction and extremely comfortable!

Best,

David

That holster lost me at "Twist Release Draw Stroke". This dog is too old to learn new tricks.

It does take some getting used to but it is by far the most comfortable IWB I've worn. Like twkd2 said, I wish they would just make a normal retention. I may have just found a new project. Put a 100 rounds through my 938 and another 100 through a new SW22 Victory today. This is one sweet little shooter and take down is MUCH easier than the MKIIIs. Life is good.

I go back and forth between my AG3.0 and my Bladetech Klipt for my P238.
My AG did NOT have the smell you speak of and I find it pretty comfy. The 3 others that I am interested in are as follows:

Stealth Gear - read some great reviews, pricey but I assume worth it.

N82 - I like the single clip and smaller foot print. I also really like the fact the entire weapon is off the skin.

Black Arch Protos - the retention of full kydex around the trigger guard but a nice leather or suede back against the skin.

Protos and N82 are similar as far as single clip and footprint so the difference would be full coverage of the N82 vs. the standard kydex retention of the Protos.

Decisions, decisions...

I have a comp-tac MTAC holster for my shield and it's been great. I have been caring it for 2.5 years and it still looks awesome. I liked it so much I purchased another for my P238. The one for the 238 is called the Calvary holster and doesn't have swappable kydex bodies.

Another very happy Alien Gear customer here. I'm on my 2nd and I absolutely love them. Extremely comfortable and seem to hold up well to everyday use. OP I would contact them about the smell and see if they can swap it out for you because for the money you will be hard pressed to find a better more comfortable holster as the Alien Gear. Don't give up on it yet.

I have a couple of AG holsters. The original model lacks the retention that I would like to see, but the Cloak 3 is fine. I have none of the problems you mention.

From the tone of your post, I'm guessing that you will not be happy with Alien Gear after your first impression with this holster, so you probably have made the right decision.

AG is an affordable system compared to say....Super Tuck. It is not intended to be a Super Tuck knock off. My 3.0 is comfortable for all day wear in all weather, and trust me I DO wear it all day everyday. Additionally it is intended as a "system" and not just a one off holster as additional shells are available for a very reasonable cost. Now with that said, there are many fine options out there and some not so fine, but it is an individual choice, just like all the options in different hand guns. It's wonderful to be face with the problem of so many choices.

Yeah, I guess I'm old school...the modular "system" benefit of this holster holds zero appeal for me. I dont want to be pulling out hex tools if I decide to carry one of my other handguns on any given day, I'd just rather grab the nice leather holster that was specifically made and purchased for that particular gun.

However, if COST is your main concern, then yeah, we can all agree that its way cheaper to have a drawer full of thermoplastic shells than a drawer full of leather holsters. Just like its cheaper to have a gun safe full of modular caliber kits for the same pistol frame...it's just not as fun as having a bunch of different caliber pistols.

I purchased this holster because it looked like the right balance of price, comfort and features...and I REALLY wanted to like it. I just cant get past the toxic odor.
