Recoil Pad Replacement

I have never attempted this, but I need to replace the recoil pads on two pre-64 Winchester Model 70's. I have a friend that has the necessary power tools and I think I have a grasp of the procedure. However, there has to be some real gotchas in doing this yourself.

I am thinking of doing it myself for the experience and to save $130 per gun on the install.

Thoughts and suggestions appreciated.

I did it once a long time ago. You've got to be careful to replicate the angles of the stock and the most important is not to let the sander cut into the stock wood.

To do this, he said to wrap 3 layers of masking tape over the end of the wood and to stop when the sander cut through one layer.

Good luck.

Sig Texas, Flash LB is correct, as that was the way to do it years ago, and can still be done that way. Today there is a jig available from several sources, that you use to get the general shape cut/ground, prior to installing on the stock, so you can use extremely fine abrasives to get a good tight fit, without taking forever. Midway has some good videos, if you haven't seen them.

Where on Texas do You live?
If it's in the Houston area try Freer Guns on Spring Branch Drive.
They are closed until after New Years though.

Sig Texas, just for your information, Firearm Parts & Accessories | Military Surplus | Numrich Gun Parts has what they advertise as Winchester Factory Red Rifle Pads, item #271290, which is 4.9" high x 1.6" wide x .4" thick. I know some had checkered metal buttplates, although I highly doubt the .300 H&H Magnum was one of them!

Sig Texas, I know you thought they may have had the current pads installed, IIRC, factory pads would have had the Winchester Logo on them.

Something not mentioned

Fitting a butt pad requires sanding wood and rubber, which means do it outside of the house, and most importantly get a good respirator. That rubber/plastic/who knows what it is, is very harmful to your lungs, especially is you are an old fart like me.

Other than that, I agree with the above, couple of layers of tape and grind away, no matter which one you get there is always some fitting

Good luck, have fun
