Built this one for my Pop...

He likes grizzly bears and is a bit of a big 'ol griz himself, so I comp'd up a personalized logo for the right side of the magwell on his rifle. It came out great.

His name is also lasered just below the logo, but I removed it from the photo.

Took the Mrs. out shooting a few months back and she got a chance to get behind a couple of my 5.56 builds for the first time. She was hooked, and immediately asked me to build one of her own. We talked through the specs a bit and decided on a dedicated .22lr upper. Here she is all finished up...

...and here she is with my YHM .22 Mite suppressor and a UTG 3.9" ITA Red/Green Dot Sight on a QD cantilever mount...

She had a few requests after the first range trip so I made a few additional modifications...

I hacked off the A2 sight post and reshaped it into a low-profile gas block, installed the quad-rail, added a Magpul AFG2 and front MBUS, then topped it off with a QD mount NCstar MKIII 4x32 scope. Also painted up a couple ladder rail covers to add a touch more pink...

VERY NICE!!!
I too build AR's... but in California, we have to make them "California Legal". If not California legal, the possessor can get arrested for being in possession of an assault rifle, which is a felony - losing their 2nd amendment rights.

Thank you Sir.

I know there are a few restrictions that make it a bit more difficult to build ARs in Cali. Glad to know you can still make it happen within the limits of the law.

They look great! I wish I had the disposable income (or the patience) to do that, but it will have to wait.

It all depends on what you're looking for. You can spend as much or as little as you want depending on the particular specs you want. In my experience I've found that I really don't save a whole lot of money building my own. There are plenty of production ARs out there that can be had for less than what I put into my builds. I build them to get the EXACT specs I want and because I enjoy the work. Also, building your own gives the opportunity to piece your rifle together one part at a time as your budget allows versus dropping a wad of cash on a production model. I get my parts from several different sources depending on availability and price including Joebob Outfitters, Midway USA, Spike's Tactical, AIM Surplus, Midwest GunWorks, and others plus a few local shops. The lower receiver is the only serialized part that requires an FFL and background check. The rest of your parts can be ordered on-line and shipped right to your front door.

Short answer, I'd say a low end price for a bare bones complete build would net you in the $600-$650 range.

No Sir,

I've done builds as gifts for my family but without an FFL the legalities of building firearms for others can get a bit complicated, especially if there is any exchange of money for goods or services. However, I have 'assisted' in a couple builds for friends and co-workers who needed help getting started.

No problem Sir,

First step is deciding what you want in your AR. Price out your parts and build it on paper first, then compare your cost estimate with production ARs out there to see what makes sense. Also keep in mind that most production ARs come with a factory warranty and you don't get that when building your own.

Good luck with your build...

Well Lazy you have inspired me, I have decided to build an AR, especially when I watched a video of a guy that seemed barely competent do a build. Its gonna take me some time I first want to get the proper tools and decide on the lower (since that is the only part i have to 4473 for) then the rest will just be gradual. That and I live in an apartment so gonna see if I can help clean out my moms garage so I can use the work bench.

Not an AR and not as "tactical" but this is my build I have been working on... Its an HK SL8.

ImageShack® - Online Photo and Video Hosting

It is still in the process. The pic rail up under the hand guard is for a bipod I am looking for now.

Good to hear. Trust me, if u can do it ANYONE can. The design of an AR is so modular that putting them together is like legos for grown-ups. Good luck with your build and I'm looking forward to seeing your progress...
