What says the hive?

I want to refinish my Marlin Glenfield model 60 that I've had for 25 years. Got as a teen and really didn't take good care of it and it developed rust on the barrel and the receiver is starting to pit and peel. Should I go back with Cerakote or re-blue it. I will be re-finishing the stock with wood stain and clearcoat and what would look better, a blued barrel and black receiver as factory or do a stainless colored Cerakote?
Looking for opinions to help me make up my mind.

I'm thinking something that is older and getting more scarce, you should go with original finish. It will keep it's value better, not as much as original but more than a modern finish on an older gun. Especially since you are going to refinish the stock as original.

That thought was on my mind but I have no intention of selling this rifle. I was wanting to make something sort of personal to enjoy and pass down to my daughter as she has really gotten into shooting. I feel confident that I can apply a coating such as cerakote but I am not familiar with the re-bluing process. I will have to sand or media blast the outside of the barrel and receiver to remove the rust and factory coating on the receiver because it has gotten bad due to my neglect as a young teen and unattended storage at my parents house until I got it back last year. I have completely stripped the rifle and did a thorough cleaning. I was surprised that it would even function with all the years of crud that was inside the receiver and FCG. Now that the inside is all clean I would like it to look new on the outside. If someone that knows something about re-bluing the barrel I would appreciate some "how to's".

I have done "cold" blueing, with the right product it can be very nice. Brownells has a couple different cold blues, the "hot" blue requires the salts and tanks with burners to heat them. The old blues hat re really good from Brownells are the Oxpho-lue nd their 44/40.

If you have a way to bake the parts you could use dura cote or similar, even powder coat, I think would hold up.

I hope this helps.

If it's been fired, I'd refinish it. If not, just keep the rust neutralized.

It's been fired plenty. I can't tell you how many CCI Stingers I have put through it. I went through boxes and boxes of them like they were BBs back in the day when they were just a buck or two a box.

I checked out the Oxpho-blue and it looks pretty straight forward. I think it will work good for it if I sand off the rust and use a buffing wheel to smooth out the sanding lines. Darn it, I'm still torn between factory blued look and a brushed stainless look.

If your not worried about collectable value, do the brushed stainless look. It seems like that's what you really want it to look like. Its your rifle, make it look how you want.

Plus, everything looks better in stainless
