Some of you may remember but Im in the process of making a long range .22LR rifle. As of right now im kind of jumping between two rifles, both bolt action heavy barrel .22s. What im really unsure of is the scope. I didnt even think of it till after the fact. Im looking to shoot at a maximum of 400 yds. though most of my shooting will be within 300. Im not sure yet what my limit will be on spending, im guessing not much, maybe $200, depending on what the Mrs says Anyway whos got some good scope advice?

You are kidding, right? Your goal of 300 yards is way beyond the capability of a 22 LR. At 200 yards, a 22 LR will drop about 11' and a challenge for anyone keeping a group. Barrel length and diameter will be no help in this endeavor. Obtaining zero with a scope will require off-set scope rings to keep elevation inside the ability of any scope's ability of adjustment at 200 yards. At 300 yards, a 22 LR will need to be fired similar to mortar rounds to impact a target and not something I suggest. Your problem is not what scope, but understanding ballistics and trajectory involved in your goal. There are organizations that shoot 200 yards with a 22 LR, as that is about as far as the round can be fired with a predictable outcome. If you seek more opinions from experienced 22LR shooters, visit RimfireCentral.com - Rimfire Community! . Good luck with your project! BTW...you don't mention what power scope you are looking for. If 36X will do it for you, keep an eye for a BSA Platinum series scope. They are about the best of the economy priced 36X scopes and can be had for a little over $100. Another is a Tasco World Class T36X. I don't believe they are made anymore, but sometimes one comes up on ebay and other sites at a reasonable price, around $100. Tasco also made another 36X scope that is inferior to the T model, so be aware of this. I own a couple of each as well as a few Weaver T36 scopes, so have been able to compare them. All usually have FCH and AO capability. Last edited by slingshot; 02-26-2013 at 09:43 AM. |
