Hey guys, it's been a while since I've been on! I've been living with my family back home for the summer and working before my last year of school starts this Fall. With that, I'm not on the computer too often, but I find myself curious for some advice. Recently my parents' neighborhood has been plagued by some major instances of theft. Even a sheriff's deputy just three houses down was robbed in the night. That being said, I've been thinking of implementing some kind of quick access safe that will hold a pistol and a few extra mags, since my current safe takes some time longer to access. I would like to get something similar to this Gun Vault. My idea would be to secure it inside a nightstand drawer with plenty of room to operate it and even bolt it down from the inside. I want to be able to lock the pistol up for safety due to grand kids frequenting and also making the pistol somewhat secure and out of sight from idle hands. I'm open to all suggestions and helpful tips on this. I figure there's no point in all the practicing I go through just to have a home defense weapon locked up where in a defensive situation, I can't get to it in a short period of time. Thanks as always!!!!!! |

The GUN VAULT is a popular method to keep a pistol secure and close at hand. I have a similar vault in my bedroom. The method I used was bolting to the floor. Should it be discovered by the petty theif it would scream GUN IN HERE and make it an inviting target. Drawers are often opened during a burglery and the same reaction would occur if the vault was found. Problem with a drawer is, it is easily ripped out of a nightstand or dresser and carried out like a TV, only to be worked on later. If lag bolted to the floor, more "risky" time would be needed to pry it from the floor. Keep in mind, if an intruder wants it bad enough, they will find a way to get it. What you need to do is just make it as hard as possible and require more time. Time is a chief enemy of a thief. I would recommend bolting it to the floor in an inconspicuous place that is still accessible quickly in the dark. |

Hi SEMPERFInk, It certainly has been a long time... When having a device such as a GUN VAULT, to secure your instrument of choice, you want it secured to something permanent. Securing it to a night stand sounds like a good idea for accessibility, but if you're not at home, a burglar can carry the night stand away with the GUN VAULT. When securing the GUN VAULT, you want to affix it to something more permanent, like as Reliable suggests to the floor. You can even secure it to the wall studs. Think of securing your weapon as a tactical situation. Do you want concealment or do you want cover? In your case, since children are involved, you would want both concealment and cover yet maintain easy accessibility. (Example: Secure the vault to a permanent book shelf which is bolted to the wall stud. Then hide the vault via camouflage methodologies- Cover it with a cloth; build doors around it; paint the vault as the same color as the book shelf; etc.) Hope this helps... |
