| Range Distances
Hello all, I am fortunate enough to live in country and have a home range on my property. My max distance is 45 yards. When i have marked off 45, 35, and 25 yards. Mostly i shoot 22 but when i feel loud i shoot 223 and 9mm. I also belong to a private range with 100the yards and 200 yard berms were i shoot the 223 and 308. What distances do you all feel is a good distance for pistol? And or ARs in 223 and 308? I generally go 10 for 10 at 25 yards with my SP2022. Im thinking that pretty good but i never know. |

I have always shot at a distance of 7 yards since over 90% of self-defense shootings are 21 feet or less.

I too practice at 7 yards for the same reason. When I go shoot with my Cop buddies, I shoot at the same distances they shoot at... usually around the 15 yards...

Pistols are anywhere from 7 to 25 yards. Every once in a while I will practice on the plate rack from 50 yards with my G35(that gets real tough). As for 223 and 308, my range goes out to 500 so thats where we stop. |

I practice at 5 to 7 yards. I am fortunate to have the range's permission to practice drawing and firing. I will practice target shooting at 10-15 yards occasionally.

I shoot pistol at 25 yds, and rifle from 100-500. Sometimes I like to mess around with the pistols and lob rounds 100-200yds at 55 gal drum barrels.

With a pistol, I go for marksmanship at 25 yards and practicality at 7-10 yards.

I like to shoot at 25 feet (little over 8 yards) If you shoot at someone farther away than that they better have a gun or your going to jail. ; ) I do run the target out to 25 yards to try and hone my marksmanship but at that range a six inch plate is almost invisible to me when I focus on the front sight. Fortunately no one has ever been killed by a plate at 25 yards. I can see and hit a silhouette target just fine at that range but again, I cannot think of a self defense situation where you would engage someone that far away. Practical accuracy is more important to me than long range shooting with pistol. With a pistol I want to quickly and reliably place shots at self defense ranges (<30') Beyond that I'd rather use a long gun. |

Kind of related. I was talking with the range master and the subject of long distance shooting came up. He said why would you need an outdoor range when 25 yards is enough. His reasoning was that a target he sold is "200" yards in the bullseye at 25. Sounded good at the time.. the more I think I'm pretty sure he was BSing. He said he was a marine so I'm sure he was messing with me. Obviously wind, glare, drop, etc won't be a large factor in an indoor range at 25 yards. Plus I'm damn sure my 9mm ain't going 200 yards that accurately. The m400 idk |

shoot at the longer distances for trigger control...shoot at the closer distances for everything else with your pistol...no issues with either...enjoy the shooting sports. Bill |

Pistol shooting is touching the target to 25 yards with the majority of the shooting 10 yards and in. With 223 and 308, 100 yards to 500 yards or so.

Yeah, I agree that practical distances of maybe 7 yards at the most are useful for self defense purposes. Ocassionally some drills for long distance shots. For fun and trigger control. Rather than accuracy, I see most people have problems with shooting from retention, shooting on the move, shooting with one hand and moving while shooting with one hand. I think THOSE are the more critical skills for gunfighting. Well, that and practicing all of the above making solid thoracic triangle shots from various angles. Just my ohhh-pinion.

When I got my first concealed permit nearly 20 yrs ago in Florida before moving back North the class k instructor advised us to never shoot past 25 ft with a handgun as the chances for a miss are too high and gunbattles with handguns rarely happen at distances further than that. | |

We will typically shoot at 7-20yds and goof off at out to 75yds from rest. We don't bother any further with a handgun. At the 7-20 yd range, we shoot from all types of positions, different grips and movements. They can really be challenging and fun and stretch your shooting skills. For rifles we use 100-200yds. Beyond that I don't think is practically necessary for our purposes. |
