Hey guys and gals, I ran into this article and thought it was an interesting read. I don't totally agree with the whole setup, but it is a good way to get the juices flowing for someone interested in making something like this. How to Make a Survival Shotgun |

Generally a good concept except for one thing Why does every article like this add the "MALL NINJA" element with one of these ![]() First of all, where it's mounted is useless unless you are swinging your barrel through crops at harvest time. In my opinion, these picatinny rail mount knives are Mall Ninja Gold for retailers but have no real practical purpose. This part polluted the entire artical for me. |

It didn't ruin the good ideas he did have for me, but I agree that this was definitely a poor move in the equipping of this shotgun.

Yea, I was thinking the same thing about the knife on the end. It's useless where it is unless you're going to swing your gun like a sword, and by doing that you risk damaging the gun. Also, something I would like to note about this type of activity: Condensing your gear or having a survival set-up isn't a bad thing, but keeping all your gear in a single place or container is a bit foolish. If, for some reason, you lose your gun, you're completely screwed. That's why My survival set-up is a small backpack, a belt full of small pouches, and clothes with pockets in them. I've done a lot of survival type stuff, and trust me the last thing you want is to be stuck in the bush with nothing. It's better to lose just a little gear than to lose ALL your gear. Now, that being said, if you're carrying extra stuff and this is just your shotty, hell yea that's a good idea. Just don't forget to bring extras that aren't on/in the gun. |

Yep. That's my biggest beef with the setup. I'm also not too fond of carrying multiple ammunition styles with only about two or three rounds of each. What if you see all birds and no large game... so you have three rounds of bird shot and no use for the slugs. And it could be said the other way around as well. I think the sling could have still been made with para-chord, but adapted to hold 25+ rounds of ammo, giving room for diversity and quantity. That seems more practical to me. I'm not a big fan of the pistol foregrip either, but that's just my personal preference. I did like the saw blade mod and incorporating the striker into the stock of the shotgun. Just curious for your opinions, what do you think about a "survival shotgun" that has the somewhat short 18"-20" barrel? It's not like concealment is an option, so part of me believes it's worth the extra weight to have a 28" barrel on the gun to make affective range for birds and small game increase.

Depends entirely on the situation. If you're stuck in a large city like say, NYC, a small barrel will definitely be better since the gun will be more for protection. If you're like me and you plan on booking it to the mountains at the first sign of serious trouble, you're right a long barrel would be better because the gun will be more for hunting. Personally, I would go with a medium range barrel, about half of the mods in the link, and a sidearm for protection. I also have a backpack set aside ready to go with survival stuff in it like 550 cord and what not. All I need now is a truck and more bullets and I'll be set, though you can never have enough ammo.
