Is The Military Dumb To Use CLP?

So recently I was cleaning my P250 and my Ruger 10/22 alongside my friend who also owns a Ruger 10/22. He brought his cleaning supplies to my house after we went shooting. He was using Militec and I was using my trusty CLP.

Halfway through cleaning the 250, gun lathered in CLP, my friend turns to me in a disgusted face and says; "you use that shit on your guns?!" I politely tell him that I used CLP in Basic Training and AIT and is standard in all branches of the military, and that I dont use anything else except for the occasional grease on the slides for storage. He continued to tell me that the military must be dumb for using something as "cheap" as CLP.

You all know where I stand, I cleaned my M4 with nothing else but CLP for 14 weeks straight. I never had a single malfunction through extreme dirt, sand, and many many rounds going through. If you properly clean your firearm then CLP does the job, am I right?

You are correct and your friend is incorrect.

He's an idiot, nothing wrong with CLP. I use the cheap break free clp from Chinamart, Remington gun oil from Chinamart, and Mobil 1 grease on my rails, or anywhere it's metal to metal contact (like the top of the barrel).

If you have fired and tested your clean/lube solution and don't have any problems I don't understand the problem. Maybe he is like some of the guys that buy expensive, fancy grease that isn't any better than Mobil 1 bearing grease and you could 100 times more of it for half the price

He claimed that CLP attracted sand and dirt. I said no shit, thats how it works, it attracts it and breaks it down so you can clean it easier.

I was wondering the same thing. I used CLP on my M16, then my M4, and it worked fine. I have a P250, and the Sig manual says to use only Sig cleaners/ lubes. I was wondering how much of that is just to get you to buy Sig products, or if there was something in the weight/ type of lubricant that was better in the Sig brand?

I swear by CLP, and never had any issues with it.

Same here, I've used CLP on all my firearms for my entire 6 years of gun ownership. As you know, in the Army we use it on everything from the M16 to artillery pieces. I also use it on my knives and have used it on bicycles before.

Recently the only oil I use besides CLP is Militec-1 for the slide rails of my handguns, the action bars on my shotgun, and the internal rails of my AK. But it's not a cleaner or protectant like CLP, it only fulfills the "lubricant" part better than CLP. Your friend might have some gumming and cleaning issues by only using it; even the Militec-1 instructions say to only use it as a lube.

The best way to avoid attracting too much dust is to use the CLP sparingly and wipe all surfaces dry.
