Question IS the SIG Service Plan (SSP) worth the investment?

I'm sending my "previously owned" P226 in to Sig, under the SIG Service Plan (SSP).

SSP consists of:
• Full disassembly of pistols down to frame and slide
• Complete detailed cleaning (ultrasonic)
• Expert factory inspection of all critical components
• Replacement of springs (recoil, slide catch lever, trigger bar, decocking lever)
• Reassembly and lubrication to factory specifications
• Installation of SIGLITE® Factory Night Sights
• Function test

Anyone have any experience (good or bad) with this service?

Wait until around father's day. They usually run a special on the SSP.

Too late for me... I've already paid! But do you feel that this is a worthwhile investment? I'm inclined to think so as I don't know how the gun was treated by the former owner.

I think it's still a good deal since they are installing night sights. That service alone is going to cost you $110 bucks or more just for the sights and installation.

It's an ok service but Sig purposely uses the oldest sights they have in stock for this service. I have sent 4 sigs to them for SSP and 2 have come back with sights from 2007. Sig CS sent me newer sights both times but it negates the advantage of paying them to do it in the first place. The quality of the supposed cleaning also leaves a bit to be desired.

My friend sent his P220 in and was very satisfied. I believe he told me that he got it back in about a week. I fired his P220 afterwards, and the trigger felt way better than before the work was performed.

I have used the SSP for a 229 & 220 --very satisfied with the results on both pistols. SIG customer service was prompt and very helpful.

I am capable of doing all the mentioned services myself except without the 'expert' title. Until shipping is added, it seems kind of high priced to me. I have already spent money to have the tools and resources available to perform a majority of any services offered in that plan. The trigger work or tuning packages, though, would be a different story. That type of work requires more knowledge than I have at this time.

If you are unsure about it's past, the expert opinion may prove wise.

Just out of curiousity, how can you tell the date on Siglites? I purchased some from Ebay and would like to know the date of manufacture.
thanks.

I think what Reliable is saying is that it is a fair price if you don't have the tools/expertise to do the work. lol

If this is going to be your hobby, buy one of these: Hand Gun Sight tool - Home - El Cajon, CA
You can save yourself a lot of money.

As someone mentioned above, I believe it's $55 shipping for both ways, too. That makes it a $200 service plan, unless you live in NH.

No it doesn't. You only pay the $55 once.

Total bill = $154.

That's what I meant - $55 roundtrip
But the service is normally $144.95 plus shipping, but I see with the Fathers Day special it's $45 cheaper.

Wish I had known about that a bit sooner; it ends tomorrow

Thought I'd revive this since I'm thinking about sending in a P228 I just bought (It took me 4 hours and a half-bottle of Hoppe's #9 to clean it today, and I'm worried about how dirty the parts I can't reach are).

The Plan includes "Full disassembly of pistols down to frame and slide" and " Complete detailed cleaning (ultrasonic)"
Down to Frame and Slide? Isn't that a simple field strip? How can they replace springs and inspect all critical parts? That's confusing.

Sig228Nut - could you elaborate on the cleaning being inferior? As for the old night sights - anything could beat mine - they're from '96 and are barely visible.

It's sacrelige how the previous owner treated this work of art.

I have sent SIG a total of 4 guns for their SSP, the last of which was a P228 that was part of the Swiss police flood of guns that came over about a year ago. The gun was really dirty but nothing I couldn't have eventually removed had I wanted to completely strip the frame and do the work. When the gun came back, it was obvious that the guy who was assigned my gun had done nothing but maybe run a quick patch through the frame and put it back together. The lesson I learned is that if the gun arrives at SIG mostly clean, it'll come back to you clean. If it arrives dirty, it will likely come back to you less than clean. There's not a lot of effort being put forth in SIG service these days. It is not a happy place to work right now. It will never be again until the Cohen era ends (one way or the other.)

Well, I'll let you know my results in a few weeks. I figured it would cost me at least $75 to have a local gunsmith clean it, so I decided to spend twice that and get springs and new night sights, too.

Plus, the more I looked at the slide; the more holster wear I noticed, so I'm having them reblue the slide while it's there.

Altogether, it's a $300 makeover, but it should all be like-new soon, except for the frame, which doesn't have near as much wear as the slide did. That's the one thing SIG won't do - re-anodize the frame.
