| New to the bolt action guns
So ive been back and forth for the past few months. At first I was going to get a tactical shotgun, might still do so. Then I asked your opinion on a target rifle, which caliber and why. Ironhorse191 got me thinking of the .308, so I did my research and here I am again in need of some advice. What I want is a .308 carbine WITH iron sights. For some reason im having trouble finding any good options. Ontop of my list is the Savage Hog Hunter.

SIG716 is a 7.62NATO carbine that can handle .308 and comes with iron sights mounted on the rail.

I've used the Remington 700 on both elk and deer hunts. Borrowed it from a friend, although I never got my critter (never saw them) I did enjoy shooting it. They have a BDL anniversary version with Iron sights, looks like a great gun.

Remington makes a nice BDL in .308 with irons. Savage makes a couple models in .308 with irons, too. It's hard to find a bolt gun these days with good iron sights. They used to be popular on the Model 70 rifles, but optics are so excellent these days that irons are eschewed entirely on bolt guns. Your other option is to buy whatever rifle you really like and have a gunsmith install a quality set of irons on it for you. |

For bolt actions, which I recently just got back into for precision rifle shooting. You cannot beat a Savage, out of the box, best accuracy and if you need to rebarrel, you can do it yourself if needed, it's easy. My opinion best bang for the buck, and like you said they have a few with iron sights. The Remmy is good, but the price on those anymore for what you are buying isn't tit for tat. My $.02. I hope this helps. Steve |

The Mossberg 100 ATR is a cheap gun that is very well received by hunters. The newer ones with the fluted barrel don't have iron sights, but the previous release did. And they're usually under $300. But it's not very tactical, in that it only holds 4 rounds and you can't modify it to accept box magazines. The Ruger Scout Rifle is a great "tactical" bolt gun...it just costs $1,000 |

bohner, if you're still looking the Howa Ranchland in .308 would be a good choice if you can find one. It was developed for a Rancher or Farmer to put in the cab of their truck or tractor. It's compact, and a nice shooting rifle. It comes as a package with a scope.
