Hey guys, a buddy of mine asked my advice on a good home defense shotgun that's under $800. I've only ever owned hunting shotguns and I'm smart enough to know an over-under isn't the prime choice for a home defense shotgun. To my knowledge I only know of the Mossberg 500 and the Remington 870 home defense shotguns and I have no personal experience with the Mossberg. If you guys have any advice or opinions on the subject in any form, I'd appreciate it so I can pass it on to my buddy.

Have him check out the new Remington 877 tactical. Like the 870, its functionally simple but has integral Picatinny rails for accessories and some other nice features. I’ve own one for about a year, have probably 200-300 rounds through it, no problems. I think they are in the $450.

The Remington 870 is the Benchmark in this class. Personally, I own a 870 Marine Magnum fitted with the Pachmayr Vindicator Presentation Kit. This both lightens the overall weight but

improves the indoor ergonomics greatly. I utilize Remington Tactical Buck loads, i.e. reduced velocity Buckshot 00 - to avoid over penetration. ( Urban Friendly ).

Most recently I added a Taurus Judge " Public Defender " in Stainless Steel - 45LC / 2 1/2" .410 ( what's not to like about a 5 shot snubnose .410 ).

The Remington 887 Tactical looks very promising as well. ** Practice-practice-practice!!!!

Pachmayr Vindicator Kit $82 msrp

870 Express Tactical $505 msrp

870 Marine Magnum $772 msrp

I am certainly no expert in the area of shotguns, but I've been using the 870 for 30+ years and they have never let me down.

I have a Remington 870 Police Model... I've owned it since the early 90's and I have never had any issues.

+1 on REM 877 TAC. I bought one gently used for $400 (online you can get for $430 but pay shipping/FFL). It points/shoots well and is LIGHT. Keep that weight in mind if you're buddy has a wife in the house. She can pick up and engage with the gun a bit better than some of the 7.5 or 8.0lb HD shotguns. Also, I took my wife to pick up and aim all the shotguns I was shopping for - makes a difference since their arms may be shorter than your buddies. Good luck.

Why go pump when you can go semi-auto?

I bought a Mossberg 930SPX (7+1 from the factory) for $550 shipped. ($20 to my FFL for receiving/transfer)

So far it's been great, on issues. Excellent sights and a top rail to mount optics should you want to.

Thanks for the advice guys. My buddy went with a Mossberg 500. I'm not sure which variant. He's very happy with it.

I'm going to guess that it is not the chainsaw:

Yeah.

Hahah, that is awesome. I have not seen it yet, so I am unsure, but I think he would have mentioned if it was The Chainsaw.

It's just a modified pump grip. Not exactly a re-tooling of the entire shotgun. Probably costs them $0.75 apiece extra to make.

After carrying a Benelli M1 Super 90 on duty for a few years I was hooked on the brand. So I will break out of the current mold and tell you I think you should get a Benelli Supernova tactical (Wanted a pump not semi for my own reasons) that I like way more than a Remington 870 or Mossburg 500 (I do openly admit they are both OUTSTANDING platforms). The Benelli has a very smooth action, is VERY simple, and A LOT lighter than the other two and, they look really cool (We all know that's important). The best part is it cost about the same as an 870. IMHO the Benelli Super Nova is not as well know as it should be.

Here is my setup

Oh come on, you know you want to buy one. It would be awesome if it were a lever action instead of a pump action.

Amhaynie, I was about to buy one of those, but changed my mind at the last minute and went with the Mossberg 500 with a 7-round tube mag. The Benelli just didn't feel right to me; and I love my tritium bead sight set-up on the 500 more than the tritium ghost-rings on the Benelli.

What kinda patterns do you get with the bad boy?

Lazy Eyed Sniper,
Where did you get the shotgun carrying case I see pictured above? I wouldn't mind having something like that for my Mossberg.
