Handguns without going broke....

As much as I love Sigs, how many find them to be somewhat price restrictive?

I have been looking, and renting, Springfield XD's, FNS, FNX, and Glocks at the range. I find the XD's, FNS and FNX fit the best for me out of the 4 and find they are relatively affordable. The Glock grip angles too much for me .

Who has any experience with these? Pros/cons? Why do you like/dislike them?

Interesting... I never bothered to notice that.. Glocks are completely polymer?

If I remember correctly, my p250 is built about the same... The grip is the only polymer part that I've seen. Is this why is it so much less expensive than other Sig's? Are Sig's usually all metal?

A few months ago I finally broke down and bought my first Glock. BIG MISTAKE.

Ran straight in to Glock "imperfecton" and Glock indifferent customer no-service.

Read the new Glock book and now understand what's going on - but I didn't then and believed the hype. I also missed out on two years worth of brass to the face posts.

When my Glock 26 Gen 4 came in I checked that it was clean and ready to go. Took it to the range and EVERY round the hot case flew back to my face. First two test rounds must have hit the tester in the face at the factory too, but they shipped it anyway.

So in addition to the price of the gun I wound up paying for a whole bunch of other stuff to make it work right. Started with a steel recoil spring guide which somehow redirected the hot cases to rain down on my head instead of shoot into my face. Some improvement. Then I sprang for the Apex Tactical ejector and plunger spring thingie. That got the hot cases to 4 o'clock where they belong. Then added an extended slide release button because the stock one is so tiny my pudgy fingers could hardly work it. Then same for the slide stop button - thank you Glockmeister for the parts. Then to Gun Goddess for an extended mag release button. Now I have a "hot rod Glock/Apex 26" Cost me a lot more than what I paid for the gun to get the gun to "work."

Same situation with my Kel-Tec PF9. Great price....but...to make it work right I'm sending it in to Galloway Precision for a short stroke trigger, reduced power hammer spring and firing pin spring, a steel guide rod, 20 lb recoil spring and Traction grips. A complete makeover. Just glad they do the work in house...don't think I could do the triggerwork.

I'm happy to have "working" guns now. But to your point - I've had to pay a LOT more than the up front low price of the gun.

You can have any two of price, quality, or service.

That's why I finally ordered the P226. I like to have the gun working right when I take it out of the box. Now...if the P226s will just somehow, someway, somewhere become available again...

It doesn't take $800 for me to buy an awesome Sig. In the past few months I bought a P6 under $400, a P225 under $400, a P220 Montague Suisse 9mm for under $400, and a LNIB W. German P220 in 9mm for under $500. All German perfection. Steel framed awesomeness. I often find quite a few used P220 .45's, P226's in all calibers for $400 to $600 at my local gun stores.

The XD's, FNX, and FNS shoot great for me. I find the p229 shoots the best for me out for the 4 though. It's more a question of long-term reliability as I tend to not sell what I buy. If I buy one, I'm keeping it.

Shot all of them, love my sig but love my glock 19 even more. I CC my G19. The safe action system is the safest imo and the fact they have been dropped from helicopters and not discharged as well buried for over a year and had hundreds of rounds fired through it with no lube speaks for itself... To each their own!

Gunbroker is littered with $500 P-series Sigs. That's pretty much the same price as all the others.

If you work it correctly, you could pick up a P-226 chambered in .22LR for $520, then pick up a conversion kit for $270 or so, giving you both calibers for around $800.

Or you can buy used for $400-600.

They are out there to be had, you just have to know what you're looking for and what you want.

Neither my Glock 26 nor my Glock 21 kicks brass in my face, but they are not generation 4 either.

A Glock, IMHO, is like holding a board. The XD which is the American market name for the HS 2000 (a Croatian product I believe), is actually a distinguished and well proven firearm. It's popularity as Springfield's XD line bears that out. Still I hate plastic guns. I would quietly look around and be patient, with time you'll eventually stumble on a GREAT deal for a used SIG or something comparable. It may not be the way you want it (aesthetically speaking), but it will be what you wanted.

Nothing wrong with looking for a good used Sig. Picked up my Sig P226R DAK in .40 cal. for $750 used. When I looked around they were going for around $1100 new. If you find a good poly-framed weapon there is nothing wrong with that either. It's what you're comfortable with paying and comfortable in your hand to shoot. Better to spend a little more and enjoy what you're shooting, then to spend less and not enjoy it. If you can spend less, have quality, and enjoy what you're shooting, then you're doing really good.

I would only buy Sig used. Also, I have been renting different weapons at my gun range. I have grown partial to the m11a1, p226, and p229. Also beginning to like the sa/da trigger. I have aslo grown to like the feel of a hammer fired weapon.
