sig 229 hammer position

Hi-kind of embarrassed-after shooting and then cleaning my 229 for 1st time and reassemblying I noticed the hammer does not sit on the firing pin. When hammer is all the way forward I can see firing pin. I can rack slide and gun goes to full cock and I can decock it with lever. So am I supposed to see firing pin or should hammer rest on it?

You should be able to see it. The only time the hammer should be able to make contact with the firing pin is when released by the trigger.

de-cocking drops hammer into the intercept notch/1 of 4 safeties.
if firearm is dropped on hammer, shouldn't fire.

& why you should never lower the hammer with the thumb with a round in the chamber, it's resting on the firing pin & may fire.
