The Benelli M2 Tactical is my home defense weapon as well. Mine is still being broken in and won't reliably cycle with "low recoil" or "lightweight tactical" 00 buck, so I use Hornady "Light Magnum" 00 buck and it works great.

I have an 870 Police as well, which is a great gun, and more versatile with ammo. But nhpaddler nailed it, a pump gun requires a LOT of skill to get accustomed to the point of not short stroking. Even very experienced shotgunners will often short stroke under stress. No issues with that with a semi-auto.

I think a shogun is a very underrated weapon in this modern day and age of pistols and carbines. The submachinegun has virtually gone the way of the dodo, but their is still no immediate fight stopper like a shotgun for close in work. Other guns such as pistols and carbines can have instant incapacitation of course, and there have been plenty of examples of this. But none cause it with the consistency/ regularity of a shotgun.

Mossberg 500, w/ the plug removed for 5+1 capacity. Got the P229 there as a backup. Mine is 18.5". I have Remington Express (law enforcement buckshot) 00 "9 ball" in it. Pretty good price, think it was around $275.

My choice is a Remington 870P with 00 buck Federal Flite Control. Six round side-saddle and a TLR-1.

But I can't argue with folks who go the Mossberg route either.

Benelli M2 Tactical. When it comes to HD don't understand why people would get a cheap firearm. I would want reliability and consistency. My M2 would do the job!

...and remember...

BANG! BANG! BANG! Stop or I will shoot!

remington 870 or mossberg 500, priced right and reliable as all get out, i have a regular 870 express, and a pistol grip mosberg 500 with a breacher barrel, neither have ever given problems.

i have a handgun speed safe and use a handgun for my primary home defense just fyi

I too will not argue with people who like the mossy. I do prefer the 870 the safety on the 870 is right there on the trigger guard just behind the trigger, which is a better set up IMHO.

Whatever you decide to get, be sure to pattern it with several different loads from different manufactures.
I've had the same size buckshot from different makers pattern completely different from one another in the same gun.

True that. See this:

Benelli Nova Tactical shotgun here with the plug removed and full of buckshot. It would probably not be the first gun I would grab but if the threat was in the part of the house where it is someone is leaving in a bag. I though about replacing it with a Benelli M4

While the Mossberg's are certainly good guns, their safety is next to impossible to engage when a pistol grip is used. Keep a standard stock on the Mossy and you'll be fine.

My 870 is my trunk gun for the mean streets of Daytwa and the Benelli M-1 is in the bedroom. The 590 and 930 both have their place, in my safe.

7+1+1, don't forget the ghost load

I love my m4 but for HD a 870 or 500/590 will get the job done for a fraction of the price.

I've owned a Mossberg for 30 years. A great shotgun. But it's time to replace it. I was thinking of the Winchester Marine.

I grew up in a Remington family... I bought one of those fancy 870 tactical hd shotguns and have pretty much decided it was a silly purchase. I already had shotguns including a Wingmaster with 18 inch open choke barrel. So I bought this other for two extra rounds? Silly...
