I'm pondering picking up a 1911 in the next year or two. I'd like to get something that's all business, and not show. (shiny nickel plating is perty, but not for me). And it's gotta be a .45. To me, a 1911 = .45. Anything else just isn't a 1911. Question 1- If I were to buy a 'nib' 1911, which manufacturers are the 'good choice' guys, and which ones are 'avoid at all costs'?? Question 2- I would love to be able to find one from WWI, WWII or Korea. I realize it might not be in greatest shape, but I assume I would be able to recondition it. I'm assuming because of the era's, I would be looking at auctions and private sellers. As I'm searching, what kind of things should I be looking for to verify the 1911's authenticity for that era? Thanks in advance! |

I have a little experience with 1911's, and if I were to go buy one today it would be either a SIG or a Springfield. Not that there aren't other good ones out there...

I started my interest in the 1911 platform with a Fusion Semi Custom Build. It was they way I chose to enter the vast field of 1911's, it's not the best way for everyone. There are as many manufacturers as there are recommendations to the questions you ask. I have heard Sig often listed as a fine shooter these days and the chief complaint is related to holster availibility due to the somewhat unique slide design (I haven't been able to quite figure that one out!) Enjoying the 1911 as a range pistol, I want one in 9mm, I am personally waiting for this to show up at the counters: ![]() One thing I can say is that the Springfield Loaded Series is often mentioned as one of the best values out there. Springfield has many levels to choose from ranging from the GI model to custom built models. I would also not hesitate to consider the new offering from Ruger, as it's getting good reviews and is reasonably priced. Look around, try some out, read reviews, figure out what featurs you would like, and then Jump In! |

SPRINGFIELD TRP OPERATOR 1911 Made for the FBI! Everything you want from a modern, tactical 1911, and nothing you don't! That would be my pick if I had the cash. Sadly, I do not. |

If you want a low cost and rock solid look at Rock Island and Taurus. 400-600$ If you want even better and not top dollar then go Dan Wesson. 1200-1500$ Than if you want to drop back down to the middle then Springfield 600-800$ For the price (and you asked) I would stay away from S&W and Colts. Nothing wrong with them at all just for the price or less you can get a better built gun. The new Ruger SR1911 seems to be a well built gun and by the time you are ready to buy the cost should drop a bit and they will have worked out any bugs if there is any. |

I have two 1911 45's... I have a Springfield Armory and an old Kimber. If I were to buy one today, I would without hesitation buy the SIG 1911...

Sounds like you would enjoy the Sig XO. As for Springfield, only buy one of those if you like Brazilian made frames, etc. Their website is deceiving, at best.

The Springfields are not completely made in the USA as you've said, but I had a Springer with a Brazilian frame that I hated to let go. Great gun, wish I still had it.

Personally, I love my two Sigs, GSR and C3 Stay away from anything made/imported by Armscor these Philipine guns are crap, Taurus too, their a bitch to get replacement parts to fit right or fix..... I'm not a fan of Para, their quality really went downhill once they moved from Canada to NC or whatever trailer park they built their "new" factory next to down there Springfield makes good ones but buy at least a Mil-Spec. Colt, Kimber, S&W, Remington and Ruger (they haven't been recalled yet have they) all make 1911's (I haven't shot a Ruger or Remington) Then there are all the High End ones, Dan Wesson, Ed Brown, Les Baer . . . but your buying more name than anything else IMHO Used 1911's are usually always availible, I know the shop I deal with usually has 7-8 there and usually a good deal |

That's a beauty warpig! Which model is that? Is everything else 'stock' minus the grips?

I own a Sig Sauer Stainless Carry 1911. I paid $860 for mine, new. For the features versus the price, I think it's the best value on the market. It's finished well. Has genuine Novak night sights. Checkered front strap. Checkered, steel mainspring housing. And it has been 100% relaible with everything I've pumped through it. And is it accurate. |

I have three 1911s - two Colts and a Kimber. These pistols are great at the range, and I'm sure they would be okay for carry but ... I purchased a Sig P220 for carry because of the features. One of my Colt's is a Clark Custom Combat and it will shoot the eyes out of a nat - to bad I can't see the nat. The other Colt is in my safe. The Kimber is outstanding and I really like it. The bottom line is that I have handled Sigs for years. I like the features, and how they work. So if I didn't have a 1911, then I would most likely get a Sig as my first 1911.

guns to avoid? hmm... guns that cost a couple grand. quite honestly, just my opinion, not necessary. I've always liked Springfield, great variety to meet your needs. No matter what your purpose (carry, competition, nightstand, etc...) |

My Sig 1911 Tac Ops and 1911 RCS are great quality and shooters for the money. I've owned Kimber's and they are also great 1911's for the price. The 1911 RCS is my daily carry. If you want a higher end than Sig, IMO Wilson are precsion built and will be my next 1911.
