I own and like the Ontario SP8, not as long as the normal machete but very thick and durable. Also Gerber and Cold Steel put some nice ones out.

+1 th3ug1y0n3.

Ontario, Gerber, and Cold Steel all make good knives and machetes. I've used Gerber and Cold Steel machetes and they're good. I've never used Ontario's machetes, but they make the K-bars and K-bar bayonets issued by the Marine Corps, which I know are good, so I'm sure their machetes are good too.

After it was acquired by Fiskars, Gerber gets a bad rap from some "purists." I think they still make a decent blade for the dollar. Have no problem with them.

I keep their stout "Bear Gryls" machete in the ductility tote in my vehicle, as I am not experienced with an ax. Don't know much about this Gryls fellow, and from what I do know he seems a bit flaky, but I think that is one sharp, stout blade that would be handy around camp and for emergency use, IMO.

+1. I like Gerber and the grip on Grylls knifes are pretty solid. I picked up a Gerber Gator Pro though.

Looks like a dandy choice.

I make my own, but the Ontario product is well made. Ralph Martindale matchets are good ones also.
