Magazines for Legion

Simple question: are the magazines that come with the Legion 229 / 266 the same as the regular ones sold in the Sig Store? Or did they change the color / finishing at all to closer match the Legion styling?

Hard to tell, but from some pics it looks to me like the phosphate finish on the 229-1 mags that come with Legion was made to match the PVD finish on slide. Or maybe they're just naturally that color?

The Legion 226 mags definitely just look like the regular, smooth black finish P226 mags to me, hopefully someone can confirm. Thanks!

They are the same.

Sometimes SIG ships what they have available so if they run low on regular mags, they may put phosphate-coated mags in, but they are all the same mags. But I only saw them do that during the real panic buying times during Obama's elections when stock on everything was low.

To add to the discussion, I just ordered 3 - 18 round (9mm) Mec Gar mags.

Best price I could find online in a quick search was grabagun at 69 shipped for the 3.

Most places Ive seen wanted 27+ each, plus shipping; and some wanted 33+

PS several forum posts, message boards, and friends who are police officers all say the mec gars are the best 226 mags. I guess I'll find out.

Might want to try some if your looking for extra mags. Also, if you MUST have sig mags, the phosphate coated 15rd (9mm) mags at cdnn are a decent buy.

The current production OEM Sig mags are made by Mec-Gar, right? So buying the Mec-Gar mags, you're getting essentially the same product, just without the Sig name on it? Or are there other differences?

I just read a different thread that the 18 rd mec gars are built to slightly better standards than the oem P226 15 rd mags which are also currently made by mec gar (if I'm understanding it right).

cant find the link but the coating and follower are different (obviously), to fit the +3 rounds. maybe the tube is better also?

Sorry, didn't mean to imply mec gar didn't make the oem sig mags. maybe in the past they didn't? not totally up to speed on who made what, and when. lol.

I've bought Mac-Gar's extended and standard for my P series pistols 229/226. I feel the fit and finish seems better.

But they all load and shoot, just like my ol' original 12 round sig 229 junkers with the new base plates, since the old ones died, split, craked.....etc.

Have not been happy with several of the Pro Mag's ive purchased. Just the opposite in quality.

Two companies make Sig magazines.

The mags marked "made in usa" are made by Checkmate.

The mags marked "made in Italy" are made by Mec-Gar.

I have both and they both function fine and the quality seems the same on both. My P226 Legion came with three 15 round Checkmate mags and I have since purchased four 18 round Mec-Gar mags. The Mec-Gar mags have a cleaner looking magazine base, the Checkmate mags base plates are flat stamped metal and they look cheap on such an expensive gun.

You will read that Checkmate mags are poor quality and worthless but as I said I have them for a P226, P320sc and P320rx and they all function flawlessly with hundreds of rounds through all of them, better then 1k on the P320rx.

My experience has been the same as that of sigfan320rx. Both the Checkmate and the MecGars have worked fine in my 226 and other Sigs.

I have a variety of magazines for my firearms, both Mec-Gar and Checkmate. Both brands were sold as SIG factory magazines. I have not had any problems with either one of them. Yes there are some finish differences, but they all work fine. My Legion came with Mec-Gar and I happened to buy a couple more magazines at a LGS and there were no differences between them that I could see, even color.

Now, Promag, turn and run and never look back!

I just checked the 3 mags that came with my P229 Legion and they don't have made in USA or Italy on them. Any ideas on which one they are (Mec-gar or Checkmate) thanks in advance...

I believe the Checkmate may not have Made in USA on them. Mec-gar usually has Made in Italy, but I guess there could be variations lot to lot.

These pics are the P226 9mm mags. Checkmate on the right and Mec-Gar on the left. Look at them closely as their are subtle differences between them. The thing that is different between them on both my P226 and P320 mags is that the Mec-Gar has plastic base plates and the witness holes and numbers are larger. Also notice how wide and square the cutout is on the back of the top of the magazine on the Checkmate mag compared to the smaller and rounder cutout on the Mec-Gar Mag.

Hope this helps you figure out which magazine you have.

My MecGars have the same thin baseplate that is on the Checkmates in the photos posted by sigfan320RX

It could be that Mec-Gar prefers the plastic base on the mags they sell over the mags they produce for Sig Sauer. Not sure why Sig prefers the flat metal base plate, it looks cheap. The Checkmate mags that came from the factory with my Sig P320's have the plastic base plate just like Mec-Gar.

I think the best way to tell a Checkmate from a Mec-Gar is the size of the witness holes and the stamped numbers. The Checkmate mags have slightly larger holes and the numbers are much larger and stamped deeper into the metal.

I have bought a P226 Legion and a MK-25 over the past year. They both came with Check-Mate magazines and the mags have functioned 100% as have the spare magazines that I purchased from SIG.

I like the coating on the Check-Mates as it makes cleanup easier and helps to protect against corrosion.
