| Getting my first handgun today!
Hi all! Just wanted to introduce myself; I am a life-long hunter and rifle/shotgun owner, but have never owned a handgun (with the exception of an old .22 I inherited from my father-in-law -- but have never fired). Today, though, that changes...as I am purchasing my first -- a Sig Pro P2022 in .40 S&W. I can't wait to get the gun, and learn about it and handguns in general. I'm signed up for a concealed-carry class at the end of March. Glad to be here and hope to learn from you all. Thanks! Steve |

Welcome to the forums from CA. Good choice. The sp2022 in .40 S&W is a solid performer. |

Thanks, all! My dad was in town visiting me this weekend, and we went to look at handguns. He has a P226 Elite, in 9mm, and loves it. I was looking for a 9mm as well, but he was suggesting that if I only plan to own one gun for now, which will have to double as a carry gun AND as a home defense weapon, that I may want to get the larger/more powerful .40 S&W. So, that's the route I'm headed. He also wanted to steer me toward a P226 in .40, but the store also had the P2022 there for an amazing price. He was skeptical, but after handling it and asking questions, we went home and researched the 2022 for quite awhile. The reviews and forum comments we read sealed the deal. Now HE is getting one, also, in .40, to complement his 9mm P226... ![]() We were amazed by the positive reviews for the 2022...Sig quality at that price point? Wow. I can't wait to fire it...my only question is with whether the .40 will be easy enough to handle. I shot a .357 mag revolver as a young teen, and I remember that it was not an easy gun to control. That's the last time I fired a handgun, but based on that experience, I felt the 9mm would have been a good gun for me -- one you could shoot all day long. I'm not so sure about the .40S&W though. But, reviews said it's not bad, and I'm not small (6'2", 200), and not a teenager anymore so I'm thinking it won't be an issue...any thoughts?Steve Last edited by steveg; 01-21-2013 at 07:35 AM. |

Steve-- Welcome. The whole caliber conversation can get dicey at times, but I can tell you, based on studies out there, there isn't much difference between 9mm and .40 because today's quality of ammo has make the debate all but pointless. I don't think shooting .40 is much worse than shooting 9 and with practice you should be fine. The biggest thing is being able to quickly get your front sight back on target quickly and if you can't do it quickly and accurately with a .40 with training, you should consider going to 9mm. If you can shoot both accurately, then it comes down to personal preference, IMO. Congrats on the purchase--you've made a great choice! |

Hello Steve, congrats on your purchase. I have the SP2022 in 9mm. I love it. The gun shoots great and fits well in my hand. I also have a Springfield XD subcompact in a .40. I can shoot both guns equally well. I am a 5'4" in 48 year old woman. (no need to discuss weight here). You won't have any problems with your new .40.

MIWildcat -- I understand. Don't want to open up any "cans of worms" with caliber talk; didn't know that was a touchy subject, but I understand! ![]() Sounds like you really can't go "WRONG" either way, 9mm or .40, though I presume from what you said there are strong proponents in both camps. Understandable. I had the debate with my dad -- though neither of us were knowledgeable enough to really be arguing about it anyway. Thanks for your help! I guess I'll find out how quickly I can touch off multiple, accurate shots with the .40, and go from there. In any case, I'm really happy to be joining the ranks of handgun owners/carriers, ESPECIALLY given today's political climate. I have talked for a LONG time about getting my carry permit and buying a handgun; recent events made it crystal clear, to me, that now is the time. Votes don't mean much anymore, but empty gun store shelves should send a loud message...I hope. I re-joined the NRA, am buying this handgun, and get my carry permit in March...I'm proud to join millions of others who are doing -- and have already done -- the same. amfowler -- Thanks for the feedback. That's good to hear. And, I had to chuckle at your weight comment! I understand... As a side note, which you being a woman has reminded me of...my daughter is 11, and I have been thinking about when is the right time to teach her to handle a gun. I have thought about getting her a .22 (that Sig Mosquito is a REALLY nice-looking gun) -- and she's 5'2" now...I think she's about old/grown enough. Maybe it's time... I also got a Crossbreed Supertuck holster coming; I guess this is not the EASIEST gun to conceal, but for those who do, it seems like from what I've read that the Supertuck is one of the better options for concealment of this gun. Like I say, this is all new to me, so any thoughts at all that anyone has to throw out there, will be well-taken and much appreciated. One thing that I can't yet wrap my mind around, is the lack of a safety mechanism on this gun. Again, knowing next to nothing about a handgun, but being someone who learned from an early age to be OBSESSIVE about the safety switch on any rifle or shotgun I am carrying, it's really going to take a mental adjustment for me to carry a gun WITHOUT a safety! Steve, My dad taught me how to handle a gun at about that age. Because of that, I have never been afraid of guns, but did learn to respect them. My husband and I have spent a lot of time with our kids teaching them how to handle a gun. They both own a gun and know how to use them. One girl and one boy. A lot of range time, but well worth it. By the way, our daughter is a better shot than our son. |

amfowler -- Thanks for the additional feedback. My dad took LOTS of time to teach me how to properly handle firearms when I was a kid, and I sure do appreciate his efforts, moreso now than ever. I think it's something every parent should do for their children, but there aren't very many places I can state that without people thinking I'm some kind of insane lunatic! I'm so glad that's not the case here, on the forum...I'm surrounded by like-minded people, which is a rarity given the folks I normally am associated with in my line of work. I can actually talk about my beliefs and not have to do so in hushed tones, looking over my shoulder to make sure no one is listening... ![]() Anyway, so as to not get too far off on a tangent...I will simply say that your post helps to encourage me to put into action my thoughts about teaching my daughter. Growing up, my mom was scared to death of guns; my wife -- though supportive, is not real comfortable either. So, while I don't have many women I know personally who are comfortable with firearms, I strongly believe that ALL women should know how to properly handle a gun. Aside from the whole second amendment reasoning, it's also the only "equalizer" out there for a lady, such that if some large, predatory male sees a woman as a target...she has a way to protect herself. I intend to do my part to add at least one very precious young lady to the ranks of female American gun owners... ![]() Thank you! Steve |

Welcome from NroCal Steve Great choice, I just purchased the 2022 9mm. Love this baby! Just sent 150 rounds down range. First 10 were in a grouping in center of the target, second at the head of the target hitting in a 6" group. I couldn't be happier with the results. Not to worry about recoil with the 9 or 40 both shoot fantastic I was concerned with the long trigger pull on the first shot but found it to be no problem. I would suggest dry practice to get use to the feel of the trigger. It will make a world of difference. Enjoy you purchased a fine handgun! |

Welcome From Wisconsin Excellent Choice! I have one in .40 as well. Just sent another 150 rounds down the range this past weekend with it and it has worked flawlessly. I practiced with the trigger, dry firing and it helped a lot. It defiantly isn't the easiest gun to conceal but it's doable even with a small frame! |

I havent shot the 2022; however, one thing I love about SIG's is how soft they shoot. I truly feel like they shoot down a caliber. You might be surprised that your new .40 cal feels like comparable nine's by other manufacturers.

Thanks, all, for the greetings and kind words about my purchase. I was able to pick it up this evening after work. VERY nice-looking gun. Now, I need to find an extra magazine or two, and some AMMO. Man, this is ridiculous! I can find NO ammo here locally; everyone's shelves are bare. The other day, I got really lucky at one store -- I secured a box of 180 gr. JHP for my home, and 3 boxes of 180 gr. FMJ for the range, but today? NOTHING is available! Anyone have any idea where a good place is to get extra magazines? Getting ANYTHING gun-related seems quite difficult right now; I'm just lucky to have the gun at this point... ![]() Sounds like the recoil on this gun is not bad at all. I really look forward to a trip to the range, in the near future... Hey Emiller -- if you are anywhere near the Norman area, and interested in hitting the range sometime, send me a PM... Steve |

Hello, Steve, and welcome from Missouri to a really great forum. Good people and info here! I have the SP2022 in 9mm and really like it. Extremely accurate and reliable with all types of ammo. Very high quality for the price. Even though you are experienced with rifles, since you are new to this handgun, self defense arena, consider taking some good self defense classes. I also recommend you check out the many free YouTube videos made by Massad Ayoob, a world-class instructor in handgun use and self defense, who has recorded training sessions in Judicious Use of Force, Shoot to Live, Home Invasion, Preparation for Home Defense, and What to Do After a Shooting. Just Google his name and these topics and the YouTubes should show up. Very good instructional information from an expert, and free. Here is a very good technical review of self defense ammo for handguns: Best Choices for Self Defense Ammo This is an informative review by a doctor of different gunshot wounds effects: Doctor Talks About Gunshot Wounds Take care, and best wishes to you and yours! |
