Interesting P238 Range Report--Hornady Critical Defense

My Sig P238 two-tone is my EDC, as licensed to me by Orange County. I wanted to carry Hornady Critical Defense, an expensive hollowpoint round, but I also wanted to test it out for feeding issues. At almost $1/round, you can't afford to shoot all that much of this stuff.

Well, I shot part of a box of it, and got 100% reliability. Also, I was shocked at the tight groups that I got with the Hornady rounds. Not only does this ammo have great terminal effects, but it is precision ammo that groups much better than ordinary target range ammo. Really made me confident in carrying my Sig. Hope this range report helps someone or other.

I have a box of Hornady Critical Defense XTP and have planned to use it as my EDC. I have a membership in a local range 1.4miles from my house that does not allow steel or aluminum cases so I haven't been able to see if my three P238's like it or not.

On another thread today a member is having problems with American Gunner XTP which my 238's love. FWIW, my 238's are dated between November 2015 and July 2016.

Hornady Critical Defense is not steel cased. It's nickel plated brass. The guys at the range will know that.
You should not have a problem shooting it there.

Federal 99 gr HST HP has shown to provide consistent massive expansion in denim covered gel tests that I've seen on YouTube. (Rare for any .380 HP).
You might want to give it a try. It also uses nickel plated brass cases.

Nickel plating is supposed to allow smoother, more reliable feeding and resists corrosion much better than non-plated brass.

My P238 Nitron has a born on date of Jan. 2, 2016, and it loves the American Gunner 90-grain XTPs.

Federal HST is my Summer defensive load out in my P238. And whatever cheap ball ammo for target practice; case doesn't matter to me since it's usually on my own land.

If you want to throw more of that type of round downrange, give FreedomMunitions a look. Their XTP loads in new brass are less than 30 cents per round. I picked up a few boxes, but haven't shot them yet.

I've put a couple hundred American Gunner XTPs through mine without issue, so that's what I carry.

X2 on the Freedom Munitions ammo. I've shot quite a bit of it in .380 & 9mm, and haven't had one misfire yet. And it's just as accurate as the Hornady boxed XTP.

.29 a round for new brass, and .27 for the re-manufactured brass in the .380

Not sure but Freedom Munitions usually offers free shipping for your first order with them.

FWIW, I tried a 7 magazine load of Hornady Critical Defense .380 through my P238 Spartan and it was slow to load the first 2 loads into battery. The other 5 rounds worked fine. The first 2 loaded as though they were in slow motion. They were the first loads in a brand new gun, and once I have run 300+ rounds through it, I will try the Critical Defence ammo again.

Fed 99 gr HST HP:
Testing starts at 3:50 Min.
He didn't like the HST because only a couple penetrated 12". The ones that penetrated less than 12" showed massive expansion.
I might be in the 'more expansion camp' myself..... Would be a tough choice though. Penetration or lots of expansion?
Precision One could be a good compromise.
