BTW, I tried the Dye thing on the FDE frame I had ... complete and utter failure! I guess it might have come out a bit of a light battleship blue, but it does not look right.

So I will be painting it soon.

Morning RatBikeRod

I have used (Rit) dye to dye a number of plastic gun parts.

Some have turned out looking great & others not so good.

What I learned is:

You can only dye darker never lighter --So using black dye on a gray magazine turns out pretty nice. Using green on an FDE part can become anywhere from $h!t brown to some putrid blue to (something uglier yet).

I have yet to dye anything green & have it look decent.

FDE is lighter than most parts start out as so that doesn't work worth a hoot either.

If you want a controllable & predictable color other than dark brown or black then paint is probably the answer.

Yea, I was hoping for finding a cost effective alternative to Duracoat (that **** is expensive), but so far no go. I do know that there are flexible plastic paints available for automotive use. I want to look into this next.

Of course you probably know this but..
A number of companies including krylon "fusion" and rustoleum make rattle can paints especially for painting plastics.

I recently bought a can of https://www.google.com/search?client....0.2_bLeDkMQ7o

The colors available in these products are mostly subtle earth tones, white and black.

Haven't tried it on anything Yet, but it will likely get tested on a polymer ak stock to see how it wears..

I am looking to try the RIT dye trick on an FDE module. I have used the pearl grey and camel dye on some p mags with good success.

What color dye did you try that turned out badly? Do you have any pics?

I'm thinking doing the camel just to make it a little darker FDE or coyote brown more like Glocks FDE color.

Also toyed with the idea of a red dead pool theme . I guess worse case of it turns out poorly you could always do black dye and darken it all the way up

I used a dark blue hoping for a medium to darker blue outcome. What I got was a really washed out lighter blue and it did not take all that well. Looked splotchy and showed imperfections in the grip module really badly.

I just got in some DuraCoat that I plan to use on a few of the spare modules I have. The dye just did not take well and it was a really dark dye.

Duracoat is definitely great stuf.

Lately I just use Krylon. Touch up is cheap and the finish is durable enough

May I ask if you used boiling water or just warm water? I had good luck on BCM and magpul parts by dipping them with tongs in boiling water with the dye. They ended up nice and uniform in color.

Im also a big fan of the rubber Talon grip for my P320 but the low cost of the grip modules makes me want to experiment with a stipple job myself.
