Sig E2 Grip Upgrade and Short Reach Trigger Instructions

Hey guys, I just ordered my first Sig, a P226 TacOps .40. I know I have small hands and that the Sig's aren't the best firearms for people who have smaller hands. Either way, I'm in love with Sig's. Their trigger is awesome, the quality is amazing, the service record speaks for itself, etc... So I wanted to set my gun up right. Unfortunately, now that I moved back to Oklahoma from Dallas, temporary, I don't have a shop that has a range, so I have to go back in memory of my thoughts from shooting the P226 and the P226.

My P226 TacOps will be in on Wednesday. I went ahead and bought the Sig E2 Grip upgrade and the Short Reach Trigger, not the SRT. I am going to drop it off and have the shop put it in. It's a new shop and they don't have much experience working on Sigs. Sig's are more East/West Coast, so the South hasn't smartened up and realized that Sig's are great. We are more Glock oriented here, which I have owned 2 Glock 23 Gen 3's. I want to provide the shop with some sort of instructions on how to do this. I got the trigger and the E2 Grips in today and there weren't any instructions. Anyone have them around? I searched on the forum and nothing came up. Thanks!

I would try first the trigger that will come with it before changing. My Mk25 has a regular trigger and my 229 DE has a short reach trigger. I want to replace my short reach trigger on my 229. I like the regular trigger on my MK25 so much better. I also have small hands

Is replacing the trigger all that hard on these? If it's simple, then I can do it myself and try it out and just have the shop do the E2

if they don't have much experience with sigs, find another shop.

Welcome to SIG Talk!

SIG P226 armorers manual toward the bottom of this link:

15 minutes to swap the trigger, 30 for the E2 grip conversion. Easy peasy.

If you are referring to the locking insert, the hammer must be decocked to remove it.

Utube has plenty of good videos, everything from SRT, DAK, triggers, e2 grips etc hint see other models, all easy, save your money take your time, dont fret YOU CAN DO IT! Fun little project one at a time. Be patient again when checking others videos, you will soon see who does what and learn different techniques. Take notes, you will be so happy to do it yourself!!! Best advise I can give!

Have to admit that it was painful watching him reinstall the locking insert though. Guess I should be thankful that none of mine are that tight; never had to muscle one that much. In fact I learned that less muscle is better when working on a Sig.

I believe the Sig P226 TacOps comes standard with the Short Reach Trigger..... Mine came standard with the Short Reach Trigger when I bought it from my LGS. I've never really seen a P226 TacOps with the standard trigger.....

Installing both the E2 Grip kit and Short Reach Trigger are quite easy if you are mechanically inclined.

Top gun, Midway, and a few others have for 20.00 the Sig armorer's DVD.
It is very worth owning.

If you are near OKC at all H&H near Meridian and 40 is a good place. Smiths and a good range.

Short Trigger & E2 Grip Installation

Most of the older members have already seen most of the following information
but it is reposted here to answer the OP's request.

http://www.sigsauer.de/files/p226_01gb.pdf
Exploded View and Parts Numbered at bottom of these pages

http://stevespages.com/pdf/sig_p229_...9;s_manual.pdf
This is a P229 Armorers Manual that is the same as the P226 and the Stainless Slide is in this one.
Also P226 but old http://stevespages.com/pdf/sig_p226_...9;s_manual.pdf
Best to open the pdf file and save it to your documents for later use.

1. Install the Short Trigger first using these instructions.

Field strip the P226 pistol first after clearing the pistol.
Field strip only means to take the slide off. Take the Slide off by racking the Slide with an empty Magazine in the pistol. The Slide will stay back so now you can rotate the Take down lever down to 6:00 O’clock. Press the magazine release and drop the Magazine out. Rack the slide slightly and let the slide forward to its normal position. Decock the Hammer by pushing down hard on the decocking lever. Next move the Slide off the front of the frame and lay aside.

The Take down lever is still at 6:00 O’clock so rotate it counter clockwise to straight up. By pulling the Take down lever and rotating it and pushing from the opposite side the take down lever will come out. When putting the Take down lever back in you would also begin with the lever straight up. Rotate clockwise while pushing inward and you will get it half way in. Then begin at 12:00 O’Clock and press in and turn counter clockwise and stop turning at 6:00 O’Clock.

Many people have trouble with the Locking insert but we will not have that trouble because we are going to do everything that is necessary.
Decock the Hammer
Pull the Locking insert upwards and forwards and out of the frame with the Slide catch spring attached. Wipe off your hands with a rag.

Carefully remove the grip screws and remove the grips.
On the right side of the pistol (if you were firing the pistol) under the grip you can see the Trigger bar spring.

If you will put pressure on the back of the Trigger and push forward, you can pull the Trigger bar spring out of the notch in the Trigger bar using your fingers. The Trigger bar will not drop down because you are holding it up by pressing the trigger forward. Let the spring drop down and take the frame end out of the frame.

This is the Middle Step:
Push the Trigger pivot pin out either way with a stout toothpic. Remove the Slide catch lever from the top of the frame. That hole in it was for the Trigger pivot pin to go through. Push the Trigger up out of the frame and remove the Trigger and Trigger bar together, upwards and frontwards. Do not bend the Trigger bar by any amount taking it out nor putting it back.

Put the new Short Trigger on the Trigger bar and reverse what you just did. Goodbye.

Actually that should be the end of it but sometimes two things can go wrong at this point. If the Pistol has the SRT or Short Reset Trigger installed, the Trigger bar with Trigger attached can be very difficult to place back into the frame. If there is a SRT then you will need to relax the Sear spring and push the SRT Sear forward. That will assist in getting the Trigger bar installed. Remember to put tension back on the Sear spring by pushing the left end of the spring to the right and under the Sear spring pin using s “V” shaped tool.

Use your stout tooth pic and line up the hole in the Trigger with the frame so you can place the Trigger pivot pin through the Trigger and the Slide catch lever and the left frame. Position the Trigger pivot pin with the two notches down and the slot on the end to the left side with the slot horizontal.
Holding the Trigger forward install the Trigger bar spring through the frame first and then under the slot in the rear of the Trigger bar. The coil needs to be sticking up and almost touching the Trigger bar. Pull the Spring out the frame slightly if you need to using a toothpic as a crowbar.

Now we need to get everything correct here.

The Slide catch lever must be touching the left frame.
The Trigger pivot pin must the centered left to right.
The Hammer must be decocked.
The two notches of the Trigger pivot pin are down (slightly forward) and the slot on the end to the left side with the slot horizontal.
Put the hooked end of the Slide catch lever spring into the hole in the Locking insert. The spring cuts the Locking insert in half and the spring is in the lower half.

Drop it right in the Frame. (may have to move the centered Trigger pivot pin left and right a few thousands) If the Locking insert does not drop right in and the Hammer is decocked, then the trigger pin is not centered or the Slide catch lever is not against the left frame. Surely the two slots in the Trigger pivot pin are down.

Start the Take down lever in the hole in the Frame with lever up at 12:00 O’Clock. Push in and turn right. 12:00 O’Clock push in and turn left.

Leave the Grips off for the new E2 Grips.

2.
Best video for E2 grips

The E2 Grips require that there is a short plastic seat and a long strut.
Standard or regular stock grips can carry the longer plastic seat the the shorter strut.

The bottom seat is for the E2 grip

Here is a picture of two P226's with the bottom one set up for the E2 grip.

Bottom 226 is set up for E2 Grip

Here are pictures of installing a E2 grip on an old P226 that started out with the old long Mainspring that had the steel seat. Read the "Preview"
as the preview shows the whole thing. (I can also email the pdf file to you)

Installing E2 Grip on older P226 with steel seat

Here are the contents of a E2 Grip Kit

The mistake that is usually made installing E2 grips is that the Hammer strut is not installed far enough back into the Hammer. When the Strut is installed correctly the Hammer will move forward when you push the Strut upwards with your fingers.

When you have the Mainspring with the Seat installed and you are ready to put the E2 grip on try this:
Get all the slack in the E2 grip on the right side. Let the left side of the grip rub against the Decocker spring, but keep space on the right side so the Trigger bar spring is never touched when installing. Push the grips forward and slightly up until the grips click into place.
