p229 elite leg holster

ok, new to the forum so here we go.

i want a leg holster for my p229 elite. finding the correct holster is harder than i thought it would be. i would like to have a few tips on which holster works best and why. i can make a much better choice with input form actual users than profit driven sellers.

your 2 best bets for a drop leg holster for a Sig 229 is Serpa and Safariland.
I haven't used either companies tactical models but I have used tge CQC and ALS both with my Glocks and like both holsters

I have a lot of confidence in the Safariland 6004 series of drop-leg holsters and their newer versions (don't know the numbers). Safariland makes a beefy holster, which is especially important in a drop-leg. If you're like most people, you spend far less subconscious time "protecting" your thigh than you do your torso/ waist. I found that drop leg holsters take way more abuse and damage than belt holsters or shoulder holsters. The Safariland versions are definitely up to the task.

Serpas are popular, but I wouldn't trust them at all. A number of highly respected courses won't even allow them. That spells liability nightmare to me, personally. And all you have to do is hold one in person to see how cheap and flimsy a Serpa feels compared to a Safariland.

As a side note, if you don't have a lot of experience with drop-leg holsters, I'll give some unsolicited advice; People in movies and TV do it wrong. The media always portrays the drop leg holster as being worn very low, in fact sometimes people have it barely above the knee. The best place for the holster is so high on the thigh that the butt of your pistol is barely below your belt line. For that reason, many people who wear them a lot remove the upper of the two leg straps entirely. I have done that with every Safariland I wore, and I also took a dremmel to it and shaved off the two upper corners of the back plate, so it kind of took on an "A" shape. It sill gives enough support that the gun doesn't flop around as you're running and moving, but it allows you to bend your legs up without the plate biting into your crotch. A drop-leg can actually be about the most comfortable way to carry a pistol IMHO. They look "tacticool" in a nerd sort of way, but an actual practical use is for when you are wearing a backpack...the drop-leg doesn't interfere with backpack waist belts as much.

As Jedi5150 stated, the drop only needs to be low enough to clear your body armor, or whatever other reason for lowering. If it's to avoid the impact of a long gun on a sling, you could also place it at 4 o'clock at the waist.
Another reason to raise the height of your pistol, is security. As Jedi5150 stated the holster will take a beating, more so because if you cinch the leg straps too tight, they cut off blood flow, too loose, and the holster "flops around" supported by a single loop of webbing in most cases to the belt.

try the 5.11 thumb drive holster made by blade tech. I've been using it for almost a year. It makes for a very fast draw with good retention:

I guess there is nothing wrong with wanting one, but unless you intend to use it as a cop, military or maybe hunting, I have to say you're going to look pretty silly wearing it out in town open carry. I ran across a fella a couple weeks ago wearing one, and it was flopping around on his leg like a bag of wet mice. I had to exercise extreme restraint just to keep from laughing him to scorn. Not to mention the fact that he was about 250lbs over weight, and if he had to get to the cool looking VP in it I'm pretty sure he'd get dropped before he could get it out. Anyway, to each his own, but as advised, the Safariland is probably going to be your best bet.
