Nice 229. Never saw a trip serial one.

See bear's pic. Not exactly normal, as most multi-serialed (made up word, I suppose) P229s, whether double or triple numbers, were manufactured for a couple of years only (maybe '94 and '95...I forget exactly). It was mentioned that there were less made in 9mm, which, given the scarcity, I tend to believe. I have a couple of 9mm with double serials on frame and barrel, but not on the slide, for example; then I have some Legacy slides in 9mm with serial number on the frame-only. It is one of the reasons I've always wanted to add a triple serial in 9mm to my collection. I'd love to fine me one in same-condition with serials and German proofs, but that would really be wishful thinking on my part. That would put it in the 'must capture a two-headed unicorn' category, of which I've never seen in the wild.

It is not normal for pistols made in the U.S., but it is for pistols made in Germany. That is one explanation for the triple matching serial numbers on the first P229s, which were made in the U.S. Exeter was trying to emulate Eckernförde when Sigarms began making/assembling SIGs here.

In the USA, only the frame is required to have a number. I guess the 320 and pistols like it only have it on the chassis or whatever they call the metal part that rides inside the polymer. I have three non-SIG pistols that wear serial numbers on the frame and the slide (but not the barrel).

With respect to the Germany - W. Germany issue:

Those same three non-SIGs were made in Germany in '79, '80, and '85. The '79 Walther is marked W. Germany and the 80s HKs are marked just Germany. Go figure.

Got pics of the 80s HKs that are marked Germany and not West Germany?

That's right! I've seen those many times. I should've said, haven't seen one in the wild FOR SALE. Those are great. The grips just put them over-the-top.

Thanks sir. It is one of those collectables for one who appreciates Sigs (especially the older ones). Hope all's been well with you.

This is why they are rare. 12131 owns most of them. And he owns most of the P228s left in existence.
