Sig 2022 Initial Impressions

So I went to the local Farm Barn today and picked up my Sig 2022 (US made). This is my first Sig.The other similar class firearms I own are the USP, Glock 19, Beretta 92FS, Baby Eagle (CZ75), and XD9.

Aesthetics

This pistol looks really nice. It looks like a fighting handgun, yet still has some degree of elegance to it unlike the Glock. Of all the aforementioned guns, this one probably looks the best in my eyes. The only thing detracting from the look is the exposed steel roll pin in the side of the slide and only the top portion of the barrel hood is polished while the sides are blued.

Feel

The 2022 generally feels good in hand, and the grip length is the perfect size for me. Without the magazine installed, my pinky comes right to the edge like the Glock 19. The finger rest on the magazine makes the grip perfect and it makes the pistol look good too.

When fully loaded, the pistol is still a tad top heavy. The top is also sort of chunky. Not P95 or USP chunky, but definitely larger than the Glock or XD. The "bore axis" is noticeably higher too, which should theoretically translate into more muzzle flip. However, this may not be so because the Sig is unlike striker fired pistols. Before the slide can even begin moving, it has to overcome the mechanical advantage of the hammer. Much of the slide energy and velocity will be used up in recocking the hammer, translating into less muzzle flip. I guess we'll see when I shoot it this weekend.

As far as pointability, the 2022 is very natural. It points like a 1911 to me, which is also how the XD points.

Trigger pull, decocking,

The single-action pull is very nice on the Sig 2022. It is no 1911 or single action revolver, but I think it outclasses the Beretta and maybe even the USP. The take up is nothing to write home about, but when the trigger finally does break it feels like breaking a glass rod.

The decocker serves its purpose, but it does not feel as positive as the USP's safety/decocker.

Here is the comment that will probably cause the most gnashing of teeth. I think the double action trigger sucks. It's long, gritty, and very harder. In fact, the trigger is harder than my wife's Taurus revolver. The Beretta, Beagle, and USP double action blows this gun out of the water. I don't what to think about it, since all I saw on the forums was "The 2022 has one of the best DA pulls of any Sig!" I even oiled all the little parts, and the pull is the same. Anyone have any ideas on this?!?

Generally overall, I like it so far. The DA trigger sort of disappoints me, but maybe it'll work itself out. I'll write more after I shoot it this weekend.

I have a SP2022 in 40, and I think its a great shooting gun. My SP2022's trigger is great - double or single action. It shoots far more accurate than I can shoot. I hope your's shoots equally as well as mine.

My 2022 had a very grainy feeling d.a. trigger pull when it was new as well... after some nights of dry fire practice trying to get used to it and a couple trip to the range practicing a lot with just the d.a. it seems much smoother now... I did not actually notice it until it was pointed out to me by my brother who didnt like it at first. we went shooting and he commented on it and when i paid attention to it, it was much smoother than i remember it being when i picked it up at the gun shop...

I got around to taking trying different grips yesterday. When I took off the grip, I discovered that I had access to all the innards. Not only that, I noticed that the fire control group was bone dry. I took a Q-tip of Mobil 1 Synthetic 5W-30,my favorite gun lube, and saturated the fire control group. The DA pull is 300% better now. Alot more smooth.

Thats good to hear. I just might try that tonight and see if i can noteice a difference. By the way, how was getting your grips off the first time? Mine were pretty tough, i had to use a screwdriver on the locking tab.

I've had my grips off three times and they are still tough to get the tab to release but I guess if it released easy then the grips wouldn't stay on under extreme conditions.
