So far I have been really impressed with Speer Gold Dot 124g
Hollow point in 9mm. It has had consistent penetration and expansion.
Here is my 9mm gold dot vs my buddies .45 hollow point his was some other defense hollow point round I want to say winchester (ill find out and post it)
Both these shots were into bundles of wet newspaper @ 10 yards with a layer of denim over the Target

Like I said iv been pretty impressed. The nice thing about hollow points for home defence is that they are designed to transfer more of their energy into the Target causing damage and stop inside (more likely to &/or slow down after passing through a Target) that Target as not to continue. Example, the bullet going through a Target then through a wall into a bedroom hitting someone else...( by target I mean bad guy)

I'll probably go ahead and give those a whirl and maybe pickup a box of the ranger-t's also and give them a go. Thanks for the input

Yea if you want to have some ballistics fun go to the local recycle area get a few bundles of old newspaper, enouhgh to stack at least two-three feet thick. Soak em a few hours and shoot away..the nice thing about the paper is that you can peal the pages back one by one to see the penetration and wound channel... Huge difference in fmj vs hollow point, and bonded jacket hollow point like the gold dot

Gold Dots, HSTs, Rangers should all be good to go. Weather you want lighter or a heavier grain is up to you and your comfort level. Buy a few boxes and see what works. Good luck!

I have already gone through this issue before. I had searched online for at least 5 or 6 hours, not including YouTube videos (which is another 5 or 6 hours; with some good advice and some terrible) but I have to admit that it's pretty much up to you. I am personally prone to the Federal HST's because just about every video I saw had zero fragmentation of the bullet and they always opened beautifully and uniformly. But they are hard to find without buying online. I also like the gold dots, Ranger-T's (newer version of the black Talons), Remington Golden Sabres and even those Hornedys Zombie Max, they all get the job done, it's Just that some blossom better than others, and I trust those HST's more than anything else I've seen. I currently have 2 kinds of protection ammo (Because where I live I just bought from my local shop). I have the golden Sabres and the Federal Hydra Shoks. I am waiting for my HST's through the mail but until I get them, my Hydra Shoks will due till then.

Overall, it's about choice. I love Federal, I love Remington, I love Winchester, they all work very well. Research a little, find the one that most "awes" you and makes you feel the most secure with. That way, if you are unfortunately in a situation where you have to use your handgun, you won't worry about not stopping the bad guy.

Hope this helps!!!

I also use gold dots. I have never done ballistic test to see how they compare with other self defense ammo on the market though. I have shot quite a few through my carry guns though, and they seem to function and shoot great through all of them so that's what I use.

I just want to add that what ever ammo you choose, get enough to shoot at the range for practice, and find out if they feed reliably, learn point of impact at various distances, etc. Then you can carry them with confidence. You do not want any guess work here!!
