1911Chef really came through for me on a set of rather hard to find old style checkered P220 grips. They are, literally, in brand new condition. Anyway, I believe in giving credit where credit is due - he's one heck of a nice guy to do business with.

Thanks to this forum and 1911Chef I now have the correct grips. And get this... My gun is a 1993 P220 and the grips are the same year! How lucky is that? :D

Ok Derek,

Post them pics! It's a funny story y'all turns out he and went to the same high school and graduated a year apart. We have mutual friends. I guess it's a small world.

Yes yes you can get Fries with that, also the best pork chili verde you ever had. :)

Honestly there was a local guy who put up and add for 220 grips so I bought all he had (3 sets). I figured some on here would want them.

It's Official - The Sig Gods Hate Me.

Well... Switching out grips is a 5 minute job - tops, right? Not for old Kurz, baby... Not for ole Kurz. I had an old set of well-used mismatched 1986 (left) and 1987 (right) grips I had ordered off Ebay that I had installed until the new ones arrived.

Ok - about an hour ago, I sat down to do an easy grip swap and post pics. I noticed the top screw on the left grip panel behaved a little squirrely but it threaded in properly. The rest went in fine.

So, on to the photography. I took a picture of the left side and she looked beautiful - just as any West German P220 should. Well, as I flipped the pistol over to photograph the right side I noticed a rather pronounced gap at the top rear of the left grip. My first reaction, of course, was that I didn't set the grip properly. So off came the screws and the panel. I reinstalled it again without the screws again - and again and again and again. Same result - with the gap.

So, I grabbed the 1986 panel and in she went - no problem. I then began to think maybe the new grip is warped for some reason. I laid them flat and nope - no warpage. The next logical step was to inspect the rear profiles and how they were cut. There is a tiny difference between the '93 and '86 profiles at the top where the slide catch lever is situated. The '86 has a recess where the '93 does not. The '86 grips are the ones that appear second and third in the photographs. Other than that, I can't see any differences whatsoever - but I'm not so sure what to do. I feel like the solution is obvious and I'm doing something incorrectly but grip installation isn't rocket science. And the '86 grip slides on perfectly.

BTW, I am in no way implying the Chef did anything wrong - he's a good guy! This is just one of those weird circumstances that can only happen to me. It's a 1993 gun that doesn't like 1993 grips.

Well, it's not a tiny difference at all. Maybe you could simply remove the excess material with a very sharp knife--or have it milled out? It looks like an injection molded soft plastic, probably nylon, so it should be easy to cut.

I had the same kind of problem with new Hogue rosewood grips for my wife's P239. Their CS requested a return, confirmed a mismatch with their P239, milled out the excess wood and sent them back (actually, they were kind to ask if I wanted a new pair). Should be in this week (but the gun is getting its nickel treatment at the Sig spa, so a picture will have to wait...)

No worries, man! I'll hold on to them because I'm sure I'll need them in the future. It's always good to have a stockpile of parts - I'm a bit of a hoarder when it comes to that sort of thing.

I'm beginning to even wonder if '93 was some sort of frame transition year. I say this because when I reinstalled the '86 and '87 grips, I noticed on the right side, the grip didn't fit perfectly flush towards the front!

I guess I'll order a modern grip set (mine won't take the slim grips because of the old style mainspring seat) and see what happens.

Please don't feel bad at all about our deal - seriously. I'm happy to have the spare set! :D
