P938 Problem: Top round in magazine unseats

150 rounds down the road I love the pistol but not how the top round partially unseats or falls from the magazine when it is removed after chambering a round. I almost slammed a loose round in the action once and, twice, had a free round fall from the handle after removing a magazine. I called Sig service and was advised this complaint was not uncommon. The rep also told me I should just get used to it when I asked for his suggested remedy. In not so many words I told him that was the kind of suggestion I'd expect from a pawn shop owner selling used .25 autos.

I told Sig it was a safety hazard, a defect, asked for warranty service and got a return authorization. For $700 I shouldn't have to ask.

The jury is out.

My 238 did this periodically when it was new. Now that it is broken-in (over 200 rounds), it functions fine.

I think it is more a magazine issue than anything. I have always thought the mag springs were a little too strong when new.

Yeah... they are the toughest springs I ever mashed a bullet on. 150-rounds was the limit of my patience; the loading pressure eased quickly but the unseating of the top round never changed. I'm sure Sig will get it right.

the round is catching on the magazine release. if you hold the mag release in then you can insert and extract all day long, but if you release the button before the top round clears the bar it catches

Regardless of how the release is handled the problem occurs only after a round has been chambered. It appears the process of chambering a round affects the orientation of the next bullet in the magazine.

I've run four type and brands in the Sig P938 and the magazine problem was identical with each of them. I fired Blazer 115gr FMJ; Winchester 147gr flat nose; Hornady 115gr FTX and Winchester 115gr JHP. I haven't experienced any firing malfunctions, just bullets getting stripped from the mag. Basically, once it's loaded (and staying loaded) I trust the integrity of the mechanism.

Yep mine same way. Ammo that stays in place for me is Speer Gold Dot 124gr JHP and Federal Hydra- Shok 147 gr. JHP.
Ammo i had trouble with Hornady Critical Duty,Winchester white box 115gr FMJ and Federal 115gr. FMJ let top round go if one is chambered.

I just took my P938 to the range for it's initial test fire. The very first round mis fired. Pulled the trigger and click..no bang. This occured several more times. I tried 3 different types and brands of ammuniton had the same problem with all 3. Also had numerous FTE's and FTF's. I was unable to get one complete magazine through the weapon. The best I was able to do was to get 3 rds in a row to fire. I admit the 3 rds were fairly accurate. The weapon is going to be my primary off duty weapon, and I need it to be reliable. I contacted SIG...they were extremely helpful and advised I send the weapon back..I was at UPS an hour later. Does anyone have any insight why these issues might have occurred. I have been a policeman for over 27 years and have used numerous weapons, this was the very first time I have ever had a situation like this. I really love the feel and the size of the gun....thus I'm hoping Sig will get it running right. I need it to be reliable. ..Any input would be immensely appreciated....thanks..

I have the same issue. I believe is has to do with the magazine. The back of the magazine at the top, where the bullet seats completely seems to be slightly tapered inward, pinching the back of the bullet casing and gouging it, whereas my wife's p238 and every other magazine I have seen seats the bullet casing squarely.

This seems to slightly push the bullet forward and out of the magazine, since it sits uncomfortably all the way in.

Email from Mother Sig this morning advises the pistol was shipped yesterday, returning tomorrow. 17 days - no biggie. Woo hoo.

Now, if they can fix the unseating problem then I am sure they can fix their communications problem, too. I hate to sound critical but I get better communication buying a $20 used car part from an online junkyard. Sig never acknowledged receipt of the pistol and didn't advise what, if any, repair was performed. So, they got it and they sent it back.

I look forward to favorable results.
