DA/SA or SAO need help deciding...

Need some help folks. I'm in the market for a P226 Legion in 9mm, have handled it in DA/SA but I'm curious about the SAO. I have run mostly striker fired handguns in the past...M&P's, Springer XD's. And most recently P320's which I like very much..but also familiar SAO type as well..several 1911's over the years, currently running a SA Loaded 1911...

Would like to hear some opinions from you folks about which you prefer in the 226. Will be mostly a range/home defense piece, but will get carried (open) from time to time.

Oh and its been 13 or 14 years since I last owned a 226.

Thanks

I like DA/SA better, as long as it has SRT. Yes, first trigger pull is heavy, but it serves as a safety- yet you don't have to flick it off. The SRT trigger is so short, you wouldn't believe it. Shorter than even my 220 Elite 10mm SAO

edit. wait, you said Legion. Haven't shot one yet, but I hear the triggers are amazing.

I like the SA/Da, regardless of SRT or not. SIG actions can be easily smoothed up by judicious break in and cleaning and luberication. And the Double Action is easily adjusted to for someone who has ever shot a revolver. and while the SA is not as smooth as a Target grade 1911, it is still very good for a production gun, once it is broken in and lubed right.

I would go to the SA/DA.

and while the SA is not as smooth as a Target grade 1911.
Oh it can be!

-bragging not intentional-

True, it takes an obsessive, scrupulous trigger job, modifying some parts and replacing others. For a defensive carry gun this level of fuss and tuning makes little sense (though I would not let that sort of logic even slow me down). My P-226 and P229's have SA triggers as good as my Wilson Combat. DA on my carry P229 is actually smoother than my Python (well, it was mine, gave it to my son).

Sounds like you have the background info.

SA, manual of arms different, should develop muscle memory to sweep safety off during draw. Some don't like carrying condition one, feeling it is somehow unsafe. Advantage, all trigger pulls are the same, typically better trigger than DA, DAO, DAK, LEM etc.

DA/SA. No safety to remember to sweep off. Carried with one chambered and hammer down. Longer, heavier trigger pull for first round (can be smooth and reasonably light 8+ lbs), follow on SA shots as with the SA gun trigger. Some may have difficulty maintaining accuracy making transition between DA and SA.

I like and carry both. Some say you should only carry one type so as not to goof under stress. I don't see that as an issue, I just sweep the safety off even if there's no safety there.

If I had to choose just one, it'd be DA/SA, though not by a lot.

Another vote for SAO. It's my avatar and my EDC and has been for quite a while now, although I occasionally rotate through my DA/SA SRT and my DAO to keep my hand in. They're all three in my weekly shooting rotation, though.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't know that a Sig SAO has "an SRT". An SAO might have a short reset by nature, and a Legion SAO might have an even shorter reset, but doesn't necessarily have an SRT.

Could someone with a SAO Legion and a DA/SA Legion please tell us how the resets compare? I would think the DA/SA Legion still has a shorter reset than the DAO Legion, but could be wrong.

I have the SAO and highly recommend it. My use is the same as you described and started with SAO, 1911's, so the manual safety is natural to me and not something else to learn and manage. I also have a P229 Legion and it is nice too but in the P226 knowing it was more for range and home use I prefer the SAO. Sig announced the P220 will be released in the Legion line later this year and I hope they include the standard and carry models in the SAO like they do today.

I'm probably the odd man out in this discussion, but truthfully, I have no preference.

My perspective is that I want to know and be able to fire them all, safely and accurately.

I have a SAO Sig P938. A DA Springfield XD-S, a DA S&W M&P9 Pro, and soon, a DAO Sig P290RS. I train with them all, am comfortable with them all, and don't want to restrict myself to one particular action type.

When I carry my P938, I have built the muscle memory to flip the safety upon draw. The XD-S requires me to have a full grip on the pistol in order to fire. Neither the Smith nor the P290RS have a safety. The first is a striker and the latter a hammer.

I am good with all of them. I hope to be able to pick up a strange weapon and fire it effectively if the need ever arose.

Just wanted to mention by way of technical information, as I've been reminded recently, the LEGION series do not have the SIG Short Reset trigger. They have the Gray Guns Intermediate Adjustable Trigger. Which, from my experience with SIGS with the SRT is an even better trigger.

FWIW, my P227 is the first DA/SA gun I've ever owned or tried, where (1) I can shoot the DA round accurately, and (2) the DA and first SA are both on target. The standard trigger for me works really well. Assuming the 226 is similar, I'd not hesitate to recommend the DA/SA version.

I feel very interesting that for me it is very difficult to change from DA/SA to SAO or DAO, and for many orher people this seems not to be a problem. In SAO I do have a BHP as a classic pistol that I like very much, and when I feel the need to carry I take it with me because I would never carry a gun ready, and because it is slim and fits inside the pants or in thr jacket better than a modern gun. So while carrying SAO or DA/SA is in my personal particular case not so relevant.
In my real shooters life, that is competitive IPSC where I've allways shot DA/SA everytime Ive tried to shoot SAO I felt so unsafe that I had to quit.
What is best is an extreme personal issue.
If you ask me I will tell you SA/DA with no doubt for competitive shooting. To carry.... both are good if you carry in condition 2.
DAO? Until now I cannot find a "for me valid reason" to ever have one other than this is the only gun available in a crisis situation.
So, take the P226 SA/DA is my recomendation.:D
