Recoil Spring question

I stripped my P229 today and took the recoil spring off. There are 3 white coils and the rest of the coils are a darker color. I don't remember which end went toward the front of the gun. Does it matter which end of the spring faces the front of the firearm?

Yes, it does matter. The tight end of the spring goes over the guiderod first. That would also mean the loose end is toward the front of the pistol

I have never used the colored end as an indicator myself.

Good question, both the 239 and the 245 have a flat coil spring as you have mentioned. I don't think it matters with this type of spring, but I do try to keep the same configuration when I reassemble as was when disassembled.

I just bought a P220, tho I do not have it in my hands yet, I expect it in the next day or two. It is a CPO. I have seen photos of it. One end of the spring is painted green, and the green end is towards the chamber. It is a braided spring.

I’ve seen talk of orange, white, and green springs. Is there any significance as to the color of the spring?

I just asked the fellow I bought my P220 from. He is a reputable Sig Dealer, and a good source for CPO guns. Here is what he says about the recoil spring colors.

Multi-strand springs:

White P229 (9mm)

Green P220 (45), P226 (357/40), P250 full size (357/40, 45)

Red P220 Compact, Carry

Orange P226 (9mm), P250 full size (9mm)

Blue P229 (357/40), P250C (357/40)

Flat-coil springs:

Silver P239 (9mm), SP2022 (9mm), SP2009, P250C (9mm)

Blue P239 (357/40), P245, SP2340, SP2022 (357/40)

So the recoil spring on the SIG P239 is the same part in both factory models, regardless of whether it is 40 cal or 357? (I phrased that lousily- I mean, do you need a different recoil spring for .357 if your model started out as .40cal?)

I ask because I'm buying a conversion barrel for my .40 to shoot 357, and have read in other forums that you may need to use a heavier recoil spring. Or is this true for some pistol makes/models but not others?

(I would ask my local gun shop, but they treat you like you are a Martian if you don't already know the answer to the technical question you are asking. Hey! They are supposed to be the experts, not me!)

Sig uses the same springs and mags. for 40/357 and list it as so.
Just comfirm the barrel fits well, and blast away.
My bar-sto drops right in. The bar-sto is wow accurate also. Got it through Top gun.
Who is your barrel maker?

Well, it probably ain't good.
I would not try to strip the rest off, just run a nylon brush over it to remove the loose flakes then drop the spring in some denatured alcohol and see how much floats off, give it a few shakes to help it along. Clean the frame and the slide thoroughly as you normally would.

If in doubt, call your gunsmith.
