| New P938 today. Pick the best personal defense ammo
A new P938 rubber grip BRG followed me home today. Manufacture date of Oct 16, 2012. Came with a 7 round extended magazine and I bought the 6 round flush also. Picked up 3 boxes of personal defense ammo to try. Please rank these in order from best to worst and let me know what you like. Federal Hydra-shok JHP 124 gr. Hornady Critical Duty 135 gr. flexlock +P Winchester Ranger 147 gr. Bonded JHP |

You have listed them in the order I would probably rank them, although 1&2 are probably equally good.

The Hornady Critical Defense is better than the Critical Duty.

Hornady is my favorite. Federal HS are a close second.

. I've seen these suggestions (not MY list) : 9mm standard pressure * Federal 115 grain JHP (9BP) use these or Winchester Silvertip 115 grain (X9MMSHP) these high pressure (and best for self defense) * Cor-Bon 9mm 115 grain +P Jacketed Hollowpoint (DON’T MAKE A HABIT OF THESE) |

Your list is very good. I use Critical defense in my 9 & 45. Federal HST in 40. I would add Speer Gold dot short barrel HP 124 as useful choice. For me it is also what is available to get at a halfway reaonable price. Where I live places all sell the same stuff mostly. All on your list will do you well. |

My 938 loves 115 grain critical Defense. It performs very well in our unscientific lined up gallon jugs of water shoots as well.

The critical duty runs through my 938 very well.

I use 95 gr. DPX which are designed to produce the same ballistics out of a 3" barrel as their 115 gr. ammo. Lately I have become a fan of all copper bullets. They form some wicked sharp petals when they expand rather than the typical mushroom shape of others. Look at the Corbon website for details. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD |

I use Hornady critical defense in all of my handguns except my 380's. They get a mag full of CorBon's.

It's funny to hear people talking about what self defense ammo they "like" when they've never actually shot anybody with it.

75rds. fired. Feeds cleanly each time and shoots striking target in consistent groups. Feed test done with 3rds. with trigger pulled rapid fire = wide groups. Slow fire (2 sec.) from rest @ 10yds. 4-5" groups. I know probably a lot better marksmen out there, but I am personally quite happy with how the Hornady shoots. CorBon did not work as well nor the Winchester self defense in the black box.

| The critical duty is a hotter load used for LEO. This round is designed to pass through different types of barriers such as glass. This round is also designed for use in full size pistols. The critical defense is designed for personal protection and home defense. This specific round is designed for all size handguns and range in a variety of different calibers. It seems to me to be a more suitable round fore home protection, especially if u have little ones in other rooms. Where the critical duty is designed to pass through barries such as walls, an innocent bystander or child could be hit. This is my opinion since I have 3 lil ones in da house. |

All the test I have seen show the C Duty opening up in everything, regardless of barriers. I consider that a good thing, especially if your rural and you EDC doubles as a woods gun against bigger critters. I would also throw PDX1 124+P into the mix. Last edited by Mystro; 01-22-2013 at 12:28 PM. |

Based on my recent experiences with my 938, if you need to defend yourself with it I would probably suggest throwing it at the person, and running like hell in the opposite direction.
