Will a P226 mag fit a P229?

I ordered some MecGar mags online that said P226 but also had P228 & P229 listed on the name of the item. I tried sliding the mag in and it clicks in, but it's not a 100% snug fit. Have any of you heard weather or not this can be done safely? I don't want to go shoot with it in and have it be a safety concern. I would also want to return it or sell it in new condition if it's not going to work for me. They are 18 round MecGar's. Any input would be helpful!

I believe it depends on the model of P229. The one's of my friend's that I've used all worked fine. Where'd you find an 18rd mag in today's world???

I have a mid 90s 229-40 and I have two 226 mags I use regular. I also shoot 9mm with it, and the mags feed 40 or 9mm just fine.
About 2008 Sig changed the 229 and went to a 229-1 magazine. They do not fit the pre 08s

P226 9mm mags will fit in P228 and older P229 9mm pistols, but of course stick out of the bottom. P226 9mm mags will also fit the newer 9mm P229-1s, but they will be a little loose because they are slightly narrower than the bottom of the gun's magazine well.

I am not familiar with the .40/.357 P226 mags, but I believe they also have straight sides and will also have a little wiggle in a .40/.357 P229.

I have a newer P229, E2 grip I'm sure. Came standard with 15 round mags that fit flush.

Thanks for all replies!

If your P229 came with 15rd mags, then they are probably P229-1 mags (wider at the bottom and taper in at top third) and your gun is recent production, built on the .40/.357 frame with the slightly wider magazine well, which explains why the new mags (narrower straight sides designed for P226, P228, and older P229) are loose.

These mags will function fine in your gun - no safety issues, but there is always the caveat that they may not be 100% reliable because the slight play, or looseness, might cause feeding problems. Good for range, slight gamble for self-defense.

All of my comments were based on the assumption that your P229 is 9mm. Sorry if I repeated myself some - that was last night.

Thanks for the info. And yes, it is 9mm. I'm going to put some rounds through it today and see how it does. I just plan on using it for the range so it should be fine for my purposes

I have a P229 .40 S&W, friend gave me his P226 .40/357 mag and it works fine on my P229. But I have a Stainless Elite model.

I got it from gunsamerica.com via Robertson Trading Post. I was a little amazed too, especially since (after placing the order) I received an email saying that I was a "backup buyer." Less than a week later, the two mags show up in the mail Only $32 each too, total steal!

I picked up a couple of the newer Mecgars with the phosphate finish for 40 S&W with the 13 round capacity. Once I discovered that size wise they were no different than the 9mm I picked up 2 from Academy and 2 from Greg Cote LLc. The great thing with that is the 13 rd 40 mag will hold 18 9mm rounds.

I've shot 9mm from my .40S&W P229 using .40 mags and a Bar-Sto 9mm conversion barrel without any problems. However, I have heard reports of experiencing feeding problems when the mags are fully loaded (I only loaded my with 10 rds) because the magazine lips are designed slightly wider apart on the .40 mags than the 9mm mags and the 9mm rounds tend to be pushed out more. I guess you haven't experienced that even with loading 18 rounds?

i think what the OP is talkin about is when the slide is locked back and the mag can jingle/jiggle in the magwell while the mag is locked in place. My p226 EE in 40 does this and it has yet to have a failure of any kind in the ~1600 rounds fired through here with 4 different mags. 2 of the mags came with the pistol, and i bought 2 aftermarket mecgar mags. But anywhos, if it works with all brands/makes of ammo you throw through it... i wouldnt worry about. thats my thought on it. Safe shooting
