Hey there. I signed up primarily hoping to get some help in making a decision on a Sig purchase. I know, it's really up to me. Believe me, when I spend my money I end up buying what I want even if the choice was not the best. However, right now, I'm having some difficulty sorting this out. I have been shooting a couple 1911's for a while with a Colt python revolver in my rotation as well. However, one evening while watching "pretator" I saw the Beretta 92FS Inox and started looking real close at some 9mm pistols. It didn't take long to pick out my favorite which is a Sig Sauer 226 elite in Stainless. Here's my delema: What calibre should I get? I was certain I wanted a 9mm. I already have a couple .45s and a .357. That would make the choice easy. Just get the sig 226 elite in stainless in 9mm. Then I run into a sig 220. Obviously another .45 acp but I do like that calibre. Dammit. Now I can't decide between the 226 and the 220. I'm not rich but I can affort to shoot the more expensive ammo. Just what should I use as a deciding factor? What would keep me on the 226 vs the 220? There seems to be something about more stopping power that makes me like the .45 over the 9mm but let's face it, I spend 100% of my shooting by destroying paper targets. I spend 0% of my shooting putting holes in human beings. So why do I get drawn to the .45? Help me out here. Psychoanalyze me. Which one should I buy and I really should not buy both. Any tips would be appreciated.

Compromise and go with the P226 in .40 S&W ! You can't go wrong with either gun, go with what feels best in your hand. Be Safe, JB |

Both the 226 and the 220 are excellent pistols. The 220 would be nice because you appear to already shoot that caliber. The 226 offers greator capacity and is available in 9, 40 and 357, If you get the 40 or 357 then all you would need is a conversion barrel and recoil spring to be able to shoot 9mm. Although some say you don't need new mags, I have found the 9mm conversion barrel works better with 9mm mags. The choice is up to you. A 226 in SS would be a very soft shooter in 9mm. Just me talking here, I have in 45 the 245, 220 and 1911, in 9mm I have a KahrPM9, 239, 229, and a 226 with a 9mm BarSto conversoiion bbl. In 40 I have a 226Elite and a G27 . Of the Sigs, the 226 in 40 would be the first to go. My vote would be get the 220 and call it done! |

I have both the P226 and the P220... I think they both have a unique feel. Buy either one because once you get the SIGness you'll end up buying the other afterwards. Which one do you buy first? It depends... If you want capacity, buy the 226. If you want knock-down power, buy the 220.

Well, they tell me the same thing on the Ed Brown forum, but I'm satisfied with just one Ed Brown. I like to look for something different that I don't already have. However, taking your advice to heart and realizing that I can always buy the 220 later, I've decided to go with the 226. I don't have a 9mm in my shooting rotation and I think it would be fun. I shoot some lighter rounds when I'm shooting rifle. In fact one of my favorites is my .22 Henry (and it's cheap to shoot). I think I'll snap up a 226 elite and have some fun with more ammo in the mags. If I just love the sig to death and want one for personal carry I can find a 220 at that point. Thank you all for responding. I know how these "what should I buy" threads get old. Sometimes though, a person has to air it out to make a decision.

I don't remember about the 220, and having the 226, I know it offers a lot of versatility. I have the 9mm and added the 22LR conversion for a lot of inexpensive shooting. When the funds are in place I'm considering ordering the 40mm kit. Either way, you can't go wrong with either model. For me, the versatility without buying individual guns won over. But then I've also been Sigitized (I'm also a Ruger revolver owner and will stay with SIG for my next purchase. |

My advice? Never buy a 226/229/239 in 9mm. Buy it in .40S&W then you can buy a .357sig barrel for it as well as a 9mm barsto conversion barrel. Hell you can even get a .22 setup for 4 calibers!

I do get your point but I'm not a conversion guy. I find no intrigue with changing barrels. If I buy a 9mm it's to shoot 9mm. Also for some unexplainable reason I don't get the appeal of a .40 cal. It seems like if want a bigger load in that price class why not just get the .45? As for .357, I've got my Henry rifle and my Colt python for those. Yea for me it really came down to either the 226 9m or the 220 .45. My end decision is that I already have .45's in my safe but no 9mm. I just placed my order and should have it shortly after Easter. I hope I like the Sig as much as I think I will. They feel nice in the hand and they are easy on the eyes. The other thought I had with a 9mm is that I might be able to get my wife to fire that one. Then kick is easy to handle and my .45's are a bit much for her.
