Sig 522 mod



This is the first Sig Sauer weapon I bought. I was impressed with the info on it, and made just a few modification to the .22 rifle.



I took out the faux gas asjustment plug. That was there to store stuff. My pockets do just fine. What I did was take off the front sight block. Drill and tap for a set screw 8-32 allend head, and attched a laser I bought from Wal-Mart for under $50.00. I wound the on/off swich cord though the handguard vents to be on the left side for activation by my thumb. The set screws allowed the laser to be mounted far enough out to access the laser's external adjustments for elevation and windage. The laser uses a larger flat head screw to tighten up the mechanism to the chassis(laser) and I had to loosen it slightly to get the laser to move, and then re-tighten. It was kind of a bitch getting the laser to point where it was hitting as even though I moved the adjustment set screws on the laser housing itself, when I tightened up the locking screw it moved it just a bit. Anyway, it provide excellent function to close in shots for the Sig 522. To change batteries, just take off the top hand guard and access the rear of the laser unit.

While were about pictures, below are Safety Lever hightlights I made for myself to see at a glance under low light and you can even fell the "dot" that is exposed when you move the safety lever into the fire position with just your finger. I drilled a small dimple in the spot covered by the safety lever when it is in the "SAFE" position and when the lever is moved into the FIRE position, the red dot now shows and you can also feel it with your fingers, even in the dark of night.

Awesome custom job! How well does the laser hold its zero?

It's pretty much dead on. My refrence is the possum beside the house a couple of weeks ago. Except he's not saying much anymore. LOL Put the dot on his head and mr possum went to visit his ancestors. With the 2 set screws at about a 60 deg to the top, it puts plenty of grip of the laser to the top of the hole where the faux gas adjuster was. I used Threadlock on the set screws, so they don't vibrate loose. The laser seems to hold where it was when I finally got it set. The big screw that locks the mechaism in place holds the adjusters and because it is pressed against the adjusting set allen head screws on the main unit, they don't have a chance to move either.

Day one - put on 551 Handguards and Trijicon Tripower. Then I ran an Eotech, then an Aimpoint then just irons (diopter rear) and finally a 1-4 scope.

Umm...not to be a jerk, but you may need to clarify a bit. The "first 556's" were on shelves in 2007 and looked like this:

What you have there is a beautiful SIG556 Classic, as it's affectionately known to some. They were on limited shelves at the very end of 2008, and en masse first quarter 2009.

Nope....to clarify, I purchased mine Feb or March of 2008 and modified it within 10 minutes of opening the box - 551 swiss handguards went on immediately. It came with the heavy "fishgill" handguards , no rear sight etc., the diopter sight in the photos is from Aurora, the FH is a copy of the Swiss FH and was made by Marcolmar as was the bayo lug. I also sourced a swiss front sight. MY SN JS010XXX I'm terrible with dates..can't remember when the first 556's hit the shelves- I was just guessing. I visisted Exeter to check out the 556 just prior to its release at the SHOT show and then it took what seemed to be an eternity before they started rolling out to the stores. I held off briefly as the earliest "two tone" mismatch guns with the canted rails were making me nervous.

FYI : assuming you actually desire a Birth Certificate for your black rifles.

Thanks.....some of the 551 handguards were a bit loose fitting, though mine fit well. I don't think the 556 was/is built to exacting tolerances in terms of handguards and receiver extensions, nor is the 551 from what I've heard from some very lucky owners....I don't really care as long as it runs 100%!
