Scope out the716 patrol

I'm in my late 50s with crappy vision and thinking about a Vortex 6.5x20x50mm PA mil dot, I usually target shoot 100 to 200 yds and every now and then I like to lob one way out there just to see if I can. But with a 16" barrel I don't want to over scope the rifles capability. I know you get what you pay for. but will $450 fetch a good 6.5x20x50? Any sig716's out there with this scope? I know there are better scopes but I shoot just for fun.... My 716 is naked but not afraid .

ironworker, for that money get the Vortex Strike Eagle 1-6x24mm. Unless you're shooting at miniature targets, this one with it's BDC reticle, should keep M80 ball equivalent ammunition on target out to at least 600 yards/meters, depending how you plan on ranging. The scope runs around $330, get a decent 1 piece QD mount, like the Burris for the remainder.

I have the Nikon M-308 4-16x42 on my 716 and it works very well. I've found the bullet drop system to be accurate out to 500 yards (the longest I can go at the local range). If memory serves I'm into it for less than $500.

I have the Viper 6.5-20 x 44 on my 516, and like it a lot. My only complaint is the eye relief is a bit short but haven't actually had any problem with it. My sight isn't that great, so I wanted the high magnification. At 100 yds, I can clearly see the holes in the target. At 200, you can still see them but not as clear. The model I have may be closing out, as they show it as limited availability, but it's been listed like that for 2 years now. Midway has run them for $329 several times, and I thought it was a great value at that price. Dead Hold BDC reticle is very nice. Check the mother of all range reports thread for a pic of the scope on my rifle and groupings I just got with it on a new ADM mount.

Thanks for the info. What mounts did you use? I want to keep the iron sights on my 716 so I don't loose them....

Here's a Primary Arms scope review that you may like to see. Rex knows about these things.

I bought one recently and have been very very impressed with it and you can pick one up for $300 at 24 magnification and for$350 at 36 magnification. Very clear optics for the price. I actually like better than my $1,200 Burris XTR II 8-40.

I first used Burris Extreme Tactical rings, high height, and had to remove the iron sights. With the ADM Recon, it is a little taller, but with the Vortex Defender flip cap covers, it still doesn't quite clear the iron sights, so I had to leave them off again. The 3.1" eye relief on that scope model didn't leave any room to move the irons around on the rail, so that may be a deal breaker for your application. On the other hand, $329 at Midway make it hard to pass up, and a slightly taller mount would allow the irons to work.

ironworker, there are several good quick release mounts out there, that have decent "return to zero" statistics. To get the right one will require some homework on your part.
First, you will need to find your iron sites folded height. Then you will need to know your scope choices eyepiece diameter. Take just over 1/2 of your scopes eyepiece diameter, add it to your iron sights folded height, and you will come up with the "lowest centerline of the mounts rings you will need. Don't forget to include any "scope covers", when you figure your eyepiece diameter.

American Defense, has a couple of different heights, depending on your needs. I've got 2 different models of their mounts, and 2 different "Extension Lengths"

Good luck with your decision, and selection!

You can't go wrong with ADM mounts, tell them what you have and they will help with selection.
Bobro low rider sights are a big help with their very low profile.
