1st: the obvious butt stock and grips are different.
2nd: the piston is slightly different.
3rd: the buffer is different.
I recently sent my GEN1 716 back to Sig Sauer and they sent me a new GEN2. Things went terribly wrong the first time i attached a suppressor. (AAC 762SDN-6).
The increase in back pressure destroyed the lower receiver by the buffer tube. YES, THE REGULATOR WAS SET TO SUPPRESSED MODE. I assumed that stock GEN1 buffer could handle a suppressor but it cannot. the back pressure sent the BCG slamming into the lower receiver. It chipped away the aluminum.
So, for you GEN1 owners, make sure you change your buffer to a H2 or H3 buffer if you are going to run suppressed. When i received my GEN2 716, the buffer is different than my GEN1. I can clearly see H2 etched into the it.
Now that i think back, the GEN1 buffer could have been a .223 buffer. I highly recommend that all GEN1 716 owners invest in a H2 buffer. It will not affect regular operation mode. Also, it could reduce some felt recoil for you.
On a side note, customer service was excellent. They sent back a new rifle and all my parts. I complained that i did not like the new buttstock and grip. they were contibuting factors for my original purchase. They sent me back my GEN1 Magpul parts. (they fit perfectly) 10min swap.
rifle swap: 10days including weekends.
parts shipping 14days.
No marks on the carrier, I believe you are correct ...tilt. I have just ordered the H2 buffer recommended by a few posts. I definitely had the H or H1, it was 3.9 oz. when I threw it o the scale. I also tore the rifle apart and gave it a good clean. The bolt was a bit sluggish with the gas rings(seals)installed. I have seen in a number of posts they are optional so I removed them. I will post a range report with them gone....This is going to be fine, I will mill the lower a small bit and remove the impact marks from the lower (gen 2 lowers have extra material removed from the factory in this spot!)put in my H2 buffer and hope this is a good fix. Buying it used does not give the option of returning it to Sig and I want to keep this rifle not sell it for something else. I guess the only other this I could do is get the Gen 2 bolt with the 2 extractors ...do they sell these as a replacement part?
Even without a warranty, I imagine they could check it out and repair it. Aftermarket trigger may be a problem but hasn't seemed to matter for those working on the MCX BCG recall issues, do not sure how they'll react.
sent in the pictures to SIG yesterday morning and left a message today with the rep I spoke with yesterday. No reply as to what they will do. I guy I got it from swears there has never been any problems with the rifle. Only a few mags through it, which I agree with ...looks new. He offered to take it back for a full refund if I do not want it...good guy. My question is can this be fixed by changing out to the H2 buffer and just removing a bit of material from the spot it made contact? the newer ones have this done by Sig.I attached a pic of mine and one of a newer 716 with the material removed by sig and the H2 buffer. Can you tell...I really want to keep it. He offered a Tavor x95 in its place as well....
My rifle got replaced because of that and signs of high pressure with factory ammo and not being able to remove a loaded round from the chamber after firing five rounds or so.
Return it or send it to Sig for a new rifle if they will approve. You have to send it in for evaluation on your dime first. Your gamble ...
I'll be selling my new rifle this month.
It now shoots good, just want something better and more expensive.
I agree with currently. Send it to Sig and let them sort it out rather than making a modification that would lower the value of the gun. You may end up with the latest and greatest version!
Just got the email asking if the rifle is completely stock. I replied that I believe the trigger is aftermarket, honesty s best...took it out and there is no brand on it but it is a red drop in trigger, not thinking it came from Sig. I told them that I really do not think that a trigger would cause this kind of damage no matter what. No reply yet. Hope they take care of me....
Sig just sent me the RMA label and asked me to mail the rifle to them. Might be OK after all. Wife is very happy they are looking at her rifle instead of me!
Mine FDE 716 came with a Magpul Stock, don't remember if it was a ACS or STR, Ergo rails and a Magpul grip. Bought it some time in 2014. Don't know for sure what gen it is.
Sig is replacing the lower on my 716. They will also be returning my POF trigger group I had in the lower and upgrading me to a Geisselle two stage trigger for my trouble. I will check it out and report back when we get it from the FFL. Sounds like they are taking good care of me!
I know this is an older thread, but very relevant to me. Bought an early 716 with Magpul green plastic stuff in May '13 (made in Jan '13), added a scope and iron sights to it and stuck it on my gun rack; never fired. (Had a health issue.) Well, fast fwd to now: finally received my SIG SRD762-QD silencer and was about to install the Taper Lok adapter, until I started reading several posts here and elsewhere about issues people were having with damaged lowers and replacing the buffer on older models. Wish I knew the future of the 716!
I just called SIG cust svc and revealed my skepticism, but the guy on the other end assured me everything would be OK if I used supersonic ammo, instead of sub. I even asked if I could send it in for an upgrade, but no. He assured me it wouldn't blow up on me, and said send it in if I had any problems.
Wondering if I should go ahead and buy an upgraded (H2?) buffer, before I try it out with the suppressor? Also, would one of the newer upper receivers mate with my old lower? I like the newer style and lighter weight. Please advise.
It’s a Gas Piston System, right? So no real buffer problems, and I think they came with an H2. Just the Adjustable gas block and a piston the size of a Javelin. You sound like you want a newer model anyway, so you might want to sell it Unfired and just buy what you really want.
@txflash, that production date would still be a Gen 1. You can also check to see if it has dual ejectors, which is one of the updates Sig did along the way to eliminate some issues, but I think that came along a bit later as well. One last thing to remember - while we hear about the bad guns, we rarely hear about the ones that run like a top from the get-go. Unfortunately, no way to know which one you have until you run it, but if there are issues, Sig will make it right for you.
This is an older thread, you may not receive a response, and could be reviving an old thread. Please consider creating a new thread.
