I purchased a sig 716 earlier on this year. I waited 7 months to receive it. Soon after my purchase i read that sig has obtained a multi million dollar contract with the Gov. I worried that now with this sick high demand has been put on sig. There will be some quality issuance issues. Sigs supply did not meet the demand. So i figured that they would be shipping out guns at a high rate. This rate would effect the quality of the guns.
My sig showed up and i noticed that it did not have the magpul stock and pistol grip on it. My theory on that is. Sig went the more affordable route and put their own stock on the gun so that they can ship out more product.
My sig was damaging the tip of the rounds as it would enter the barrel. picks below. I sent it back to sig and they stated that they fixed the fail to feed issue. I got the rifle back and now its a lot better but it still is damaging the tip of the bullet. Now the gun is going back a second time. I am a sig fan i own 3 sigs and i will continue to buy more. I am upset that this $2500 gun is having issues. Its a 1k yard gun and it should not be at this poor quality.
My suggestion is to feed a round into the chamber and then slowly manual eject the round and inspect the the tip of the bullet.
This was my issue. It would hit the feed ramp then hit the rim of the barrel like a speed bump causing bullet deformation. In this picture it shows when it would jam while trying to feed.
I am pretty sure that sig must know about these issues. There are only a few people that would go to the Internet and discuss these problems. When i started this post I immediately got a response. Sig should recall those batches of firearm that has shown problems.
But I don't think that they will. I herd that some of the sig product line is not what it used to be. It will be a few months before I can properly check out the correction on my 716. I'll keep posting.
New add on. Magpul xtm hand stop. I like the adjustability and feel of it. The Ambi safety is great. It's not a flush fit. But it functions fine. I suggest using the stock spring instead of the one in the package. The stock spring allows for a smoother feel.
New addition. This grip eliminate the pinching feeling that you get from under the trigger Guard. It is also at a different angle. Check out the youtube reviews on this. It's great.
Please post your add on's. I would like to know what I can put on.
I just bought my SIG716 a week ago and it was had some bad FTE problems at first. The box says that it was manufactured in FEB of 2014. I also noticed some severe bullet deformation as noted above. I have ran about 20 rounds through it after taking it down and cleaning/lubing it ever 5 rounds. The FTE problems seem to be easing away. I can much more easily manually eject a round that has been chambered. I will check again tonight to see if the bullet deformation has improved too. I just thought these were all "break-in" issues I was having. I have yet to really put it through it's paces. I will update with any new information.
Don't let yourself spend to much time and aggravation over these issues. If you are still having issues after 100 rounds send the rifle back....Why spend your hard earned money on ammo trying to figure out what should have been correct when leaving the factory.
I think when you buy a high end brand like Sig your gun should be able to handle any name brand ammo. You know I almost bought a Kimber Solo 9mm but it was so finicky with what ammo it would take that I passed on making the purchase and wound up buying my first Sig P938....which eats everything I've tried so far.
Point being that the 716 should function with almost all ammo. I had an issue with my Ruger 762, which is a competitor to the 716. Sent it right back to Ruger with a detailed letter of exactly what was wrong and what I expected from them. The rifle was returned in better than new condition as they worked on it specifically for me and not an assembly line...
My Gen 1 716 was sent back to be polished after ramp feed issues and not happened since. I hope I never run in to the issue I am seeing here or back to Sig it goes!!! The forums I read in other areas stated that "Sig Service was great once you get past the operator's" In the event the rifle was bad enough Sig did however replace the entire rifle free of charge. Hope that helps you
Sig will make it right I'm sure....It's just sad that gun companies often release models of handguns and rifles with the corporate policy that they'll fix the issues once the gun gets out in the public hands instead of doing everything they can to send it out functioning correctly from the factory. At the current prices of Sig rifles and even the Ruger AR rifles, these weapons should function flawlessly from the factory instead of us having to spend hundreds of dollars on ammo to break them in....
I may have missed it in scanning the 5 pages of posts- but has anyone had issues with the polymer tipped bullets? I was at the range this morning testing some Accubond loads and after seeing my target (7-9" groups @ 200yds) I started to think that it is deforming the tips. Except... two loads resulted in 2.5" groups. Anything between (the best grouping) OAL of 2.695 and 2.800 was unpredictable. There was no gradual change- it was 2.5" to 8" to 2.5". I pulled a chambered round and didn't see any deformation and haven't seen any marks under the feed ramps. I'm going to have to look at the feed ramps a little closer after reading this thread.
My 716 does ok with the 168 Custom Comp's (2" @ 200yrds) 2.800 OAL but anything else I've tried (150gr B-Tips, 165 Accubonds, 180 Accubonds) just makes noise.

I just checked and there is no marks near the feed ramps. Cycled a few rounds and inspected the tips. Dinged. But since the Custom's are hollow, it folded in on itself. The ballistic tipped rounds (oal 2.790) I tested didn't look/feel damaged. However, there are small crescent shaped dings on all the cases just below the shoulder and scratches on the bullet and case.

Knock on wood, I have not had any feed issues or jamming with my 716. Although I have only ran about 200 rounds through it.
I will have to see if mine deforms the tip of the bullet when I get home.
I must say, For the amount of money I spent on this gun, I will be thoroughly disappointed if only certain types of ammo will work, while others jam.
I bought this gun because of the Sig Sauer name. I wanted something reliable in case the ****. If something were to happen, who wants to base your life on a maybe in case you grabbed the wrong ammo of what was available..
I picked up a box of Win 7.62x51 for 16 clams at Cabelas a few days ago. Cycled some and none came out dented.
I think for my 716 the issue with the CC's denting is the OAL. The oal's of the loads range from 2.790-2.810, but the ogive is the same. Have to find that sweet spot right at 2.800... so says the group at 200 yds
I had the same issue as some of you in this thread. When chambering a round , the round would not chamber completely, and it would be hard to extract. I was just about to box the 716 up and send it back to sig when I decided to try one more thing.
I disassembled bcg and found thick nasty grease. Cleaned off the grease and applied a generous amount of rem oil and the gun operates flawlessly now. I hope this helps!
Fwiw...... just a few rounds through my 3 gun heavy....no malfunctions....loaded full mag 20 rds...fed first rounds no issue....inspected bullet tips, no damage that I could feel with finger nail vs new never chambered round.
Same experience here, My 716 3G Heavy came in Friday evening, spent the morning yesterday doing a thorough cleaning and headed to the range. first 20 rounds went flawlessly with no FTF/FTE. Chambered and ejected about 5 rounds and not a mark on any of them.
I'm going to be buying a 716 at the end of the month. I'm trying to gather some of the supplies I need to maintain and run it before hand, so I can "hit the range running" when I get it.
I've seen several people say they lube their BCG with grease instead of regular oil for the "break in period" and I was wondering what sort of grease y'all are using? Is it just standard high-temp white lithium grease, or something more exotic?
I don't go for that fancy grease on ar bolts, I like low viscosity oil like break free, but not too thin like rem oil. I may use a light grease going forward on my piston, I am hoping it keeps carbon from sticking to the rod.
I have been following this forum for some time now watching and waiting for my sig to break in. This isn't going to happen. Well over 600 frustrating rounds from PMC bronze to PPU battle packs. I broke down and cleaned according to the manual before initial use. I was elated. I finally bought my beast. I waited a year for FDE. And my heart sank the first mag I loaded. (10rds thx Cali ) shoved it in the mag well, closed the bolt and the first bullet.....fails to feed and chamber properly. Half fed and hits the face of the barrel. Smudging the tip of the bullet the same as pics pages earlier. Didn't even chamber!! I consider myself extremely patient. I have had enough. I will be calling for a replacement upper tomorrow.
To make matters worse. I convinced a good friend of mine to also purchase a sig716 in black. In comparison his is a different lower and from what I can tell a different contour of barrel face at the chamber. His first mag after cleaning fed and closed perfectly. Side by side his rifle with zero rounds through it fed flawlessly. Today at our local range we shot side by side. He never had a malfunction from factory to his handloads. I am VERY upset to say the least. Can't even count how many rounds I have "mortard" out of it. I'll try to get photos of barrel contours of his and mine. His rifle was made last month via the sticker on the box. That's my rant ......
I'm sure Sig will take care of it for you. I have to say I would have sent it back for repair/replacement much sooner, but I know it's tough to stomach sending a new gun back, especially after that long wait. Interesting on the barrel differences. Does yours have the newer style extractor, which I believe has 2 pins? And does your friend's extractor match yours or is it different as well?
I'm learning a lot from the discussion. What I feel I need advice on is ammo selection. I now feel fortunate that the function of my 716 has been flawless, but the accuracy has been depressing.
I want a bullet that will do 1 MOA at 100 meters. I've found one type of ammo that does this: Federal Tactical 165 gr Bonded Soft Point. At 35 bucks a box it should be good.
PMC, Georgia Arms, Surplus, DAG, etc are not giving me good groups at all. Nothing 150 gr has really worked well.
Also, it seems that my shot groups really suffer with a warm barrel or if a round sits in a hot chamber for any length of time. I understand the reasons for this, but this is a huge difference. A much bigger difference than I've seen with any 556 AR. And it seems to have gotten worse since I've been shooting it. My first trip to the range seemed to go well with Georgia Arms 150 gr ammo. Not great, but something to work with.
I too have a 716 that has not been fired as of yet due to all the snow here.
I have been reading with great interest all the 716 post.
My main problem with ammo choice is this.
If this rifle only fires reliable with certain ammo.
It is truly a worthless rifle.
As we all know ammo is hard to find sometime, as well as expensive.
And lets face it. What if you NEED your rifle? You can only find what you can find, and it is not the flavor your rifle will feed ?
To me, then it is a club not a rifle.
Again I'm speaking on a broad issue as I do not even know how well my rifle will fire .
And even if my rifle fires flawless it sucks for all of you that have had trouble.
I'm one of those that had great luck with the M400 so I went with the 716 when selecting a 7.62 platform rifle.
I guess it just gets to me with some of the post I read that are happy with their rifles only firing a certain ammo.
I have to say if my rifle shows to be unreliable mine will be gone in a heart beet. It is not the only 7.16 show in town.
