If you wait to justify buying a SIG based on utility, or actual need, or on number of times you'll fire it, or on any other logical basis, you'll never buy one.
SIG owners buy SIGs based on emotion. I have seven of them. They are beautiful. They look good. They feel good. They are magnificent pieces of machinery. They feed my ego. They are good companions. I love them.
And I will buy more of them. For no better reason than I want to.
Life is short, live it up before it's too late. Treat yourself, don't cheat yourself. It's like barbie, but for men, you can dress it up and finger bang it all you want...
NEED??? Not since Viet Nam service has 'need' been the criteria for purchasing any of the 4 Sig rifles or the other dozen or so PIG. (Politically Incorrect Guns) Several only get shot once or twice a year, one is new and unfired since the year 2000.
I view purchasing guns the same way grandma purchases 30 sets of salt & pepper shakers. Because I LIKE them, WANT them, and can AFFORD them.
Or, in the words of a 3 year old child "just 'cause." NUFF SAID!!
My 516 has proven to be ultimately reliable and very accurate. It has earned the top place in my collection as the "go everywhere I go, truck carbine." AK47 reliability and accuracy on par with a good varmint rifle is rare. I didn't even buy this one to keep, I just wanted to see how a gas piston would perform. When I picked it up the first time, I didn't even look at the brand, I just told the owner of the lgs to show me the piston drive models. No emotion, no brand loyalty, the 516 had the features I was looking for, felt good and solid, and the price was right. The fact that it runs cleaner and is a breeze to clean is icing on the cake. So, I really never could justify the purchase, I can justify keeping it, my arms have to earn the place. If they don't perform, they gone!
Hi, new here, but not to Sig's. I amnew to the 516 and just bought one with an Eotech XPS2 and G33 magnifier. Will be another couple of weeks before I get to shoot it as I'm focused on training for and shooting my IDPA Classifier the next 2 weekends.
Seems to me the 516 is pretty much in the "middle" range for AR rifles as far as $$. LWRC, Novesk, Larue, Knights, and a few others are easily $500-$1500+ more. I bought mine because for the price of around $1300 I think it's probably one of the best values out there.
I've always liked the piston system and though it was under rated way back.
I still own a daewoo k2 and wondered why no one had copied that system many years ago.
so if it was me I would just buy it and not look back.
you won't regret it.
I was slightly apprehensive as I was checking out the 516 and the Ruger SR556. Having a gen 2 716 made the choice easier. I wanted something reliable, piston operated, and proven. knowing the 716 setup had worked the sig came home.I paid over 1400 for the 516.Ran a couple hundred rounds through it dialing it in,got it to where i was pleased w it. Ultimately i had it out w some friends who had colts and HK's, we ran a can of 62 gr green tip ammo through it in a few hours, it ran fine, the trigger felt better than ever and there were no FTF's that afternoon. The barrell was smoking hot and still performed fine after we let it cool off for a few minutes...the only other rifle id do that with is a Rec 7....
I'm picking up my Christmas present on Saturday at Fin Feather Fur in Ohio. A new 516 for $1349.00. I got the green light from my wife today, to make the purchase. I just have to install a remote starter on her car in exchange, which is a good deal for me.
Forgive my ignorance, but what're the main differences between the Sig 516 and the Sig 556? I've been toying with the idea of adding a black rifle to my meager collection.
The 516 is an AR based carbine with a short-stroke gas piston operating system.
The 556 is based on the Swiss Sig Sauer 550 rifle, It's operating mechanism is more closely akin to what one would find on the Kalashnikov family of rifles, a long-stroke gas piston system. Renown for its accuracy, robustness and reliability. Often refered to the AK perfected or the perfect marriage of the two cold war adversaries the AR and the AK, all their strengths and few of their weaknesses...Kinda like the Daewoo K2 but a smidge prettier..
Remo, don't overlook the Sig716 for the Socom; I literally walked to the counter at my LGS to buy the Socom and the owner/friend took me aside alone and told me to go with the 716. When I asked why, he said "both are great but, trust me go 716". JMHO
Just a quick question, in the 2012 SIG catalog the promise was for a 516 chambered in .300 blackout to be coming soon, what happened to that rifle, I was looking forward to having one straight from SIG in that round, now I'm saving up for a 716, since I liked the AR controls ever since basic training, but want the punch of a .30 cal round more than the .223.
