Question about low cost 3x or 4x Magnifiers

Hello

I'm looking at getting a 3x or 4x magnifier for my MCX.

Currently I'm using a MetroLite M21 (triangle reticle). 99.999% of the time this will be used at the range to make shooting at 25+ yards easier. Budget is an issue and I'm not looking for the best thing on the market.

I've done some checking on Amazon and AliExpress. There are a lot of options around the $75-$100 mark. I know I'm not getting the best glass and I'm fine with that.

What experience to people have with low cost magnifiers?

How do you determine the correct hight to buy?

Any suggestions would be very helpful. I'm also fine with buying the mount and magnifier separately.

This one on Amazon seemed to be a good comprise of price and function.

Well, I tried one on my AR and was not satisfied. I have a very inexpensive Bushnell TRS-25 red dot that works tolerably well and decided to try a 3X magnifier to improve sighting beyond 50 yards.

I bought the UTG 3X magnifier with quick deployment flip to the side mount, and wound up sending it back after a brief trial. The unit seemed pretty well built, but even after being flipped to the side, there was insufficient clearance to deploy my Magpul flip-up MBUS rear sight. The biggest problem was that this particular unit simply had insufficient eye relief.

I wound up getting a Nikon P-223 fixed magnification 3X scope instead. After mounting the scope rings on a pair of UTG 1/2" high quick release risers, the scope is about as easy to put on and take off as the UTG 3X magnifier was. The eye relief is vastly better.

But apart from the eye relief the difference in optical clarity is night and day. The scope reticle is finer and sharper than the red dot on my Bushnell, and the unit gathers much more light than a 3X magnifier behind a reflex sight can.

The only advantage I can see to the red dot/magnifier combo is if you anticipate the need to rapidly switch between targets at short and long ranges.

Primary Arms has an extended eye relief version, it is in one of the links I posted above. I have used it on my PM400 with a TRS-25 and on my P716 with an Aimpoint PRO both of these have factory BUIS and no issues using them to cowittness with the red dots. I have used the vortex on both "pistols" with the same good results, eye relief was a little tight when on the 716, once in awhile it would just brush my glasses when touching off a round.
